The rules, and how we treat them
Vaastu is a traditional system many Indian families follow, and in a bedroom it is unusually easy to accommodate: the elements it cares about — bed, wardrobe, mirror, dressing unit — are all things we are designing from scratch anyway. We take the client's or their consultant's requirements as a planning input at layout stage and work to them. We do not make claims about what a direction produces, and we will not pretend a room can be re-oriented when it cannot.
| Element | Preferred | Avoid | Changeable in a finished flat? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Master bedroom | South-west of the plan | North-east | No — but the room's internal layout is |
| Head of bed | South, then east | North; feet toward the door | Yes, almost always |
| Wardrobe | South and west walls | Blocking the north-east | Yes, at design stage |
| Mirror / dressing unit | North or east wall | Directly facing the bed | Yes, and it is inexpensive |
| Study or work desk | Facing east or north | Back to the door | Yes |
| Attached bathroom door | Not directly facing the bed head | Open door line to the pillow | Partly — a 1200 mm wardrobe return solves most cases |
| Children's bedroom | West or north-west | South-west (kept for elders) | No |
Why bed direction is the easy win
A bed is loose furniture. Rotating it costs nothing at design stage and a morning's work afterwards — the only real constraint is that the socket, the reading light and the AC throw have to move with it. That is why we ask about bed direction in the very first meeting rather than at 3D stage: if the head has to go to the south wall, the wardrobe usually has to leave that wall, and that single swap changes the whole room plan.
- Fix the head wall firstSouth, or east if south is impossible. Everything else in the room arranges itself around this one decision.
- Check the door swingFeet pointing straight out through the door is the placement most consultants object to. A 100 mm bed shift or a re-hung door usually resolves it.
- Move the wardrobe to the opposite runIf the wardrobe was on the south wall, it goes north or west. Check the room still has a 750 mm walking aisle on both sides of the bed.
- Re-plan the electricals before wiringBedside sockets, reading lights, the AC point and the TV point all follow the bed. Deciding this after conduiting costs ₹12,000–₹30,000 and two weeks.
- Place the mirror lastNorth or east wall, and not in the line of sight from the pillow. A wardrobe-internal mirror on a pull-out solves the hardest rooms.

Design and build under one accountable roof
The dimensions that decide whether it fits
Most bedroom vaastu conflicts are really space conflicts. A king bed against the south wall in an 11 ft room leaves you 1.1 m of remaining width for a wardrobe plus circulation, and 1.1 m is not enough for a 600 mm wardrobe and a walking aisle. Knowing the numbers in advance tells you whether the direction change is free or whether it costs you a bed size.
| Bed size | Mattress (mm) | Frame footprint (mm) | Minimum room width for a wardrobe opposite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 900 x 1900 | 1000 x 2010 | 2450 mm (8 ft 0 in) |
| Queen | 1500 x 1900 | 1620 x 2010 | 3050 mm (10 ft 0 in) |
| King | 1800 x 1900 | 1920 x 2010 | 3350 mm (11 ft 0 in) |
| California king | 1830 x 2130 | 1950 x 2240 | 3400 mm (11 ft 2 in) |
Add 100 mm each side if the wardrobe has hinged rather than sliding shutters.
Wardrobes, mass and the north-east corner
The guidance to load heavy storage onto the south and west walls and keep the north-east light is one of the easier ones to honour, because it maps onto how we plan wardrobes anyway: the tallest, deepest mass goes on the wall you do not have to walk past, and the corner with the window stays open. In a standard 12 ft x 11 ft Mumbai master bedroom, a 9 ft wardrobe run on the south or west wall at 600 mm depth gives you roughly 42 running feet of hanging and shelving — enough for two adults — while leaving the window corner clear.
- Sliding shutters where the aisle is under 900 mm; hinged where it is over 900 mm, because hinged gives you full access to the carcass and costs 12–18% less.
- Loft above 2100 mm for seasonal storage — that mass sits high on the same preferred wall and takes nothing from the floor.
- Keep the dresser off the north-east corner; a 450 mm wall-hung unit on the east wall does the same job without the mass.
- If the room's only sensible wardrobe wall is the north-east, a lower 2100 mm run with a light finish is the compromise most consultants accept over a full-height dark block.
Mirrors, the rule everyone asks about
The common instruction is that a mirror should not reflect the bed, particularly the sleeping person. It is inexpensive to honour and awkward to retrofit, so decide it during design. Three solutions work in practice: put the full-length mirror inside the wardrobe on a pull-out frame; mount it on the return wall perpendicular to the bed; or, in small rooms, use the back of the bathroom door. A dressing mirror on the wall directly opposite the headboard is the one arrangement we would not detail if the client has raised vaastu at all.
Colours and light
| Zone | Traditional guidance | What we specify | Why it also works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walls, master bedroom | Light neutrals, soft green, cream | Warm off-white or clay, matte emulsion | Forgiving under 3000 K light; no colour cast on skin |
| Feature wall behind bed | Earth tones; avoid stark black | Fluted wood veneer or a muted teal | Absorbs sound, hides socket clutter |
| Wardrobe shutters | Match wall tone; avoid heavy dark on north-east | Matte laminate, oat or graphite | Matte hides fingerprints at handle height |
| Ceiling | Light, uncluttered | Simple 150 mm cove, no multi-level drop | Keeps 9 ft 6 in rooms from feeling compressed |
| Bedside lighting | Soft, warm | 3000 K, 300–400 lumens each side, separately switched | Enough to read, not enough to wake a partner |
Rotating a bed is free in week one, awkward in week nine, and expensive after the conduiting is buried.

Frequently asked questions
Is it bad to sleep with your head facing north as per vaastu?+
North is the direction most vaastu consultants ask to be changed, and south is the preferred alternative with east as the usual second choice. It is a traditional guideline rather than a health claim. Practically, it is also the cheapest change to make — a bed is loose furniture, provided the bedside electricals were planned for it.
Can I keep a mirror in the bedroom as per vaastu?+
Yes — the usual instruction is only that it should not reflect the bed. North or east walls are preferred. In small Mumbai bedrooms the neatest solution is a full-length mirror on a pull-out frame inside the wardrobe, which costs about ₹4,500 to ₹7,000 in Hettich or Ebco hardware and disappears when not in use.
Which direction should the wardrobe face in a bedroom?+
Traditional guidance places heavy wardrobes against the south and west walls so they open toward the north or east, keeping the north-east corner of the room light. In practice we plan the bed first and put the wardrobe on whichever remaining wall gives a 750 mm aisle — if that lands on the north-east, a 2100 mm-high run in a light finish is the usual compromise.
Does the attached bathroom door position matter?+
Many consultants ask that the bathroom door not open directly onto the head of the bed. In an existing flat the door position is fixed, so the standard fix is to turn the bed 90 degrees, or to build a 1200 mm wardrobe return that screens the door line. Both cost far less than re-framing a door in a shear wall, which most societies will not permit anyway.
Should children's bedrooms follow different rules?+
Traditional guidance reserves the south-west room for the eldest occupants and places children in the west or north-west, with the study desk facing east or north. In a 2BHK there is only one non-master bedroom, so the room is decided for you — we focus on the desk orientation and on keeping the bed head to the south or east.
