Design and build under one accountable roof

Adhesive, grout and the part that decides longevity

A tiling failure in a Mumbai flat is almost never a tile failure. It is the bedding or the grout.

  1. Adhesive class. Use a cement-based tile adhesive rated for the tile size and substrate — C2TE for large formats and for tiling over existing tile. A sand-cement bed under a 1,200 mm tile leaves voids and the tile cracks over them.
  2. Full coverage. Notched trowel plus back-buttering. Any hollow area under a tile is a future crack, and you can hear them by tapping a coin across a finished floor.
  3. Levelling clips on anything over 600 mm. One millimetre of lippage on a polished tile catches the light from every angle.
  4. Epoxy grout in wet areas. It costs ₹35–70 per sq ft more and it does not absorb, darken or grow mould. In a Mumbai bathroom it is the single best value line in the package.
  5. Movement joints. Every 4–5 m on large floors and at every change of plane, sealed with neutral-cure silicone.

Single-source bathroom packages: when they help

  • Helps: a fit-out with several identical bathrooms, where one supplier, one delivery and one after-sales contact reduces coordination materially.
  • Helps: projects where the client wants a single warranty conversation rather than separate ones for tiles, WC, basin and faucet.
  • Does not help: a single premium bathroom, where the best item in each category from different makers usually gives a better result at the same money.
  • Watch: concealed cisterns and shower mixers are the items where quality differences show up over years. Specify those on merit even if the tiles come from elsewhere.
  • Always: record model details of every sanitary item in the handover file. Cartridges and flush plates are consumables over a fifteen-year life.

Our independence

Greenbox is an independent studio with no dealership, distributorship or commercial arrangement with Somany Ceramics or with any other tile or sanitaryware manufacturer. We specify on the merits of each item, buy through Mumbai dealers at market rates, and pass through supplier invoices where we procure. Nothing on this page is an official price from the company.

Frequently asked questions

Is Somany as good as the other big tile brands?+

At equivalent technical specification, the large Indian manufacturers are closely matched. What differs is design range, availability of a particular size in Mumbai and dealer discounting. Choose the tile on absorption, PEI class and slip rating, then on how it looks.

Should I buy tiles and sanitaryware from one supplier?+

On a multi-bathroom fit-out it simplifies logistics and after-sales meaningfully. On a single bathroom it usually costs more than buying the best of each. Either way, specify the concealed cistern and the shower mixer on merit, because those are the items you will live with.

Is Greenbox affiliated with Somany?+

No. We are independent and hold no dealership or distribution arrangement with any tile or sanitaryware brand. We buy on the open market and share invoices where we procure for a client.

Why does my tiled floor sound hollow in places?+

Incomplete adhesive coverage. The tile is bonded only at the ridges of the trowel marks and there are voids underneath. Those voids become cracks when something heavy is dropped. It is a laying defect and, once the floor is finished, it is fixed only by lifting the affected tiles.

Is epoxy grout worth the extra cost?+

In bathrooms and kitchens, yes, clearly. It does not absorb water, does not darken and does not support mould, which in a Mumbai bathroom saves you a re-grouting exercise every few years. At ₹35–70 per sq ft more, it is the best value upgrade available in a tiling package.
