HDHMR board: what the premium over MDF buys you

HDHMR sits between MDF and plywood on price and on behaviour. Used for the right component it is excellent value; used as a plywood substitute in a wet area it is not.

Why it behaves differently from MDF

MDF is made from fine wood fibre; HDHMR is made from coarser wood chips and strands bonded with a higher proportion of resin, pressed harder. The coarser furnish gives the panel more internal structure, which is what improves screw holding and reduces edge crumbling. The higher resin loading is what improves moisture tolerance.

Where we specify it

  • Routed and PU-sprayed shutters. This is the application HDHMR was made for. A shaker or fluted door in HDHMR holds its profile edges and takes spray with minimal putty.
  • Machine-pressed laminate shutters. Flatter than ply, so the pressed laminate face has no waviness.
  • Wall panelling and fluted feature walls. Large flat areas where the board will be painted and never wet.
  • Wardrobe shutters in coastal flats, on a BWP carcass. The shutter is the component that sees humidity swings most; HDHMR handles it better than MDF.
  • Office storage and workstation modesty panels, where pre-laminated HDHMR gives a harder wearing surface than pre-laminated particle board.

Where plywood still wins

HDHMR is marketed hard as a plywood replacement. On four counts it is not.

  1. Load-bearing shelves. HDHMR creeps less than MDF but more than ply. Over 900 mm of span with weight, ply is the right board.
  2. Wet-area carcasses. Kitchen base units, vanities, utility platforms — anywhere standing water is plausible — stay in BWP. HDHMR resists humidity; it does not resist a leaking waste trap.
  3. Anything screwed repeatedly in the edge. Ply takes an edge screw and holds it; HDHMR does it once well and the second time less well.
  4. Site-cut structural work. HDHMR is heavy, dulls blades quickly and produces very fine dust. For work that will be cut and refitted on site, ply is easier to handle.

Mumbai behaviour and handling

  • Weight matters on site. An 18 mm 8 × 4 ft HDHMR sheet runs 42–50 kg; in a building with a small service lift, this affects delivery planning and labour.
  • Store sheets flat and off the slab. HDHMR absorbs slab moisture from the bottom sheet just as MDF does.
  • Cutting produces very fine dust with high resin content. Insist the contractor cuts outside the flat or uses extraction — society complaints in Mumbai buildings usually start with dust, not noise.
  • Seal cut edges immediately. The advantage over MDF disappears entirely at a raw edge left through a monsoon.

Care, life and BOQ wording

  • Finished HDHMR needs no care beyond that of its finish; it is never the exposed surface.
  • Expected life on PU-sprayed HDHMR shutters in a Mumbai bedroom: 15–18 years. In a kitchen, on a BWP carcass, 12–15.
  • BOQ: “Shutter blanks in 18 mm HDHMR, minimum density 800 kg/m³, CNC routed to approved profile, all faces and edges sealed before finishing.”
  • BOQ: “HDHMR permitted for shutters and panelling only. All carcass, shelving and wet-area components in 19 mm BWP ply to IS 710.”
  • BOQ: “Hinge and runner fixings to be into board face; edge fixings to use threaded metal inserts.”

Frequently asked questions

Is HDHMR better than plywood?+

For flat, routed, sprayed components, yes — it machines better and is flatter. For carcasses, loaded shelves and wet areas, no. The correct answer in a Mumbai flat is usually both: BWP carcass, HDHMR shutters.

Can HDHMR be used in a bathroom vanity?+

We do not recommend it. A vanity sees splash, condensation and the occasional overflow. HDHMR handles humidity well but swells at a soaked edge like any fibreboard. Use BWP ply or a WPC board for the carcass and put HDHMR only where it stays dry.

Why is HDHMR more expensive than MDF?+

More resin, denser press, and a coarser furnish that costs more to prepare. You are paying for about 20% more mass per sheet plus a better bonding system, which shows up as screw holding and moisture tolerance rather than as anything visible.

Does HDHMR need edge banding?+

Yes, on any exposed edge, exactly as MDF does. Two millimetre PVC on laminated work, or sealed and sprayed on PU work. A raw HDHMR edge in a Mumbai kitchen will take up moisture and swell, losing the advantage you paid for.

Is HDHMR heavier to install?+

Noticeably. An 18 mm sheet is around 45 kg against 33 kg for MDF, so hinges take more load and tall shutters need three hinges rather than two. We allow for the extra hinge in the hardware schedule rather than discovering it at installation.
