Scandinavian dining design ideas

The Scandinavian dining room is a table, a bench, a couple of chairs and one paper light. It is the least expensive dining zone on this site and it suits a small flat unusually well.

Four pieces and nothing else

  • The table. 1,600 × 850 mm in ash or oak, 25 mm top, tapered round legs, no apron and no stretcher. Made to size in Mumbai this is ₹42,000–₹68,000, which is less than most readymade tables of similar quality.
  • The bench. 1,500 mm long, 380 mm deep, 450 mm high, same timber. It tucks fully under the table, needs no clearance behind and seats two adults or three children.
  • Two chairs, not six. Loose chairs on the open side only. The style is about having fewer, better pieces rather than a matched set of six.
  • A sideboard with open and closed storage. 5 ft at 400 mm deep, closed below, one open shelf above for everyday crockery. This is the one place open storage is acceptable, because it is away from the kitchen and it is used daily.

The Scandinavian dining palette

Pale and even, with the wood as the only warm element and one muted colour in the textiles. Warm the white by two or three percent for Indian daylight.

  • Warm white #F8F5EF — walls and ceiling
  • Pale ash #DFD1BA — table, bench and the sideboard
  • Soft sage #BCC7C0 — the bench cushion or a painted alcove
  • Greige #9A8C7B — the rug and the seat pads
  • Matte black #25272A — the pendant flex and the sideboard handles

What to make and what to buy

  • Ash or oak veneer on a 25 mm stable core for the table top, with solid lipping. Solid ash tops are available and move in Mumbai humidity; a veneered top with a solid edge is more stable and looks identical.
  • A matt PU or hardwax oil finish, not a gloss. Hardwax oil can be spot-repaired when a glass leaves a ring; PU has to be stripped and refinished.
  • A bench with a hinged seat for storage, holding table linen and the crockery you use only at gatherings. It is the only storage the zone needs beyond the sideboard.
  • A paper or opal glass pendant at 750–780 mm, on a dimmer. Paper shades are inexpensive, diffuse beautifully and are replaceable when they yellow.

What a Scandinavian dining zone costs

75 sq ft dining zone, Scandinavian specification, Mumbai 2026, ex-GST
ElementSpecification2026 Mumbai cost
Table and bench1,600 mm ash table with tapered legs plus a 1,500 mm storage bench₹78,000
Sideboard5 ft at 400 mm deep, closed below with one open shelf above₹62,000
LightingPaper or opal pendant on a dimmer, wired on its own circuit₹22,000
TextilesFlatweave rug, seat pads, light cotton curtains₹26,000
PaintWarm white to the zone, low sheen₹14,000

Total at this specification: ₹2,02,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. Two loose chairs at ₹6,000–₹18,000 each sit outside this figure. Buying two good chairs rather than six ordinary ones is the approach the style suggests.

Three Scandinavian dining mistakes

  1. A matched set of six chairs. It fills the zone, costs more and contradicts the style. Bench plus two chairs seats the same number and leaves floor visible.
  2. Open shelving near the kitchen door. Everyday crockery on an open shelf 2 m from an Indian hob collects oil. Keep the open shelf at the far end or make it closed.
  3. A gloss finish on the table. It shows every ring and cannot be spot-repaired. Hardwax oil or matt PU, both of which can be touched up.

Scandinavian dining in a Mumbai flat

The bench is what makes this work in Mumbai, because dining zones here are usually strips that double as circulation. Put the bench on the wall that has no door, no window and no socket you need, and keep 1,050 mm of pull-back on the open side only. The second local note is the timber finish: a hardwax oil top is lovely and needs re-oiling annually in Mumbai's humidity, which takes an hour and a cloth; if nobody in the household will do that, specify matt PU instead. Third, paper pendants yellow faster in a flat near a road or a kitchen, so treat them as a five-year item rather than a permanent one — at ₹3,000–₹9,000 that is a reasonable trade.

Frequently asked questions

Is a dining bench comfortable?+

For a meal, yes, with a 50 mm seat pad and a 450 mm seat height. For a three-hour dinner with guests, less so — which is why the arrangement is bench on the wall side and chairs on the open side.

How much does a made-to-size dining table cost in Mumbai?+

₹42,000–₹68,000 for a 1,600 mm ash or oak veneered top with solid lipping and tapered legs, made locally. That is usually less than a comparable readymade table and you control the dimensions.

Does the table need to match the sideboard?+

In this style, loosely rather than exactly. Two pale woods in the same family reads better than a matched suite, which looks like a showroom set rather than a room assembled over time.

What light suits a Scandinavian dining table?+

A paper, opal glass or plain metal pendant at 750–780 mm, on a dimmer. Large diffuse shades suit the style; small directional spots do not. Budget ₹3,000–₹18,000 and treat a paper shade as replaceable.
