What translates and what needs shade
| Element | Nordic version | Mumbai issue | What we do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slatted timber bench | Pine or spruce | Softwood rots and warps | WPC or teak slats |
| Maximum sun exposure | Scarce daylight | Unusable 3–6pm, Mar–May | Add a screen or a retractable blind |
| Blankets and cushions | Cold evenings | Mildew in the monsoon | Storage bench; bring them in |
| Pale painted floor | Light reflection | Shows dirt and monsoon stains | Pale WPC deck, liftable |
| Pot groups | Informal planting | Water under pots on the slab | Pot feet or a raised tile |
| String lights | Evening warmth | Works well | IP65 rated, 2700K |
The one real change is shade. Everything else is a material substitution rather than a design change.
The Scandinavian balcony palette
Pale and simple, with the planting and the light doing the work. Keep the built elements in one tone so a 35 sq ft space does not read as a collection of objects.
- Warm white
#EDE8DE— the back wall in exterior emulsion - Pale WPC
#D6C3A5— the deck and the bench slats - Soft grey-green
#7C8A82— the planter and the screen - Leaf green
#375E3D— the planting - Matte black
#26282A— the string light flex and the bracket
Materials for a small outdoor space
- WPC slats rather than softwood for the bench and deck, because pine and spruce rot and warp within two Mumbai monsoons. Teak is the premium alternative and needs annual oiling.
- Interlocking deck tiles laid loose over the slab, ₹180–₹340 per sq ft, lifting individually for cleaning and over the drain.
- IP65 rated string lights at 2700K, not indoor fairy lights. Indoor string lights fail within one monsoon and their drivers are not weatherproof.
- A retractable blind or a light slatted screen on the west side, which is what makes the balcony usable in the pre-monsoon months.
What a Scandinavian balcony costs
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Deck | Interlocking WPC tiles laid loose over the slab | ₹26,000 |
| Bench | 1,500 mm slatted WPC or teak bench with storage beneath | ₹32,000 |
| Planters | Two simple planters with pot feet and a liner | ₹18,000 |
| Lighting | IP65 string lights at 2700K plus one wall light | ₹10,000 |
| Textiles | Outdoor-grade cushions, stored indoors during the monsoon | ₹12,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹98,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. No fixed joinery and nothing drilled into the parapet. The whole scheme can be removed in an afternoon, which suits a rented flat.
Three Scandinavian balcony mistakes in Mumbai
- Softwood furniture. Pine and spruce are the authentic materials and both rot here. WPC or teak.
- No shade. A west-facing Mumbai balcony between March and May is unusable from 3pm without a screen or a blind, whatever the furniture is.
- Indoor string lights. They cost a third of the IP65 version and last one monsoon. The driver is the part that fails.
Small balconies in Mumbai, done simply
This is the cheapest balcony scheme here and it suits a rented flat, because nothing is fixed and nothing is drilled into the parapet — which most societies object to anyway. Two practical notes. The drying rack and the AC outdoor unit are usually what is occupying the floor; a ceiling pulley rack and a wall bracket for the condenser cost ₹10,000–₹16,000 together and return more space than any furniture decision. And plan the shade before the furniture: a west-facing balcony in April is a hot, bright surface that nobody sits on, so a light slatted screen or a retractable blind on that side is what makes the ₹98,000 worth spending.

Frequently asked questions
Will a wooden bench survive a Mumbai balcony?+
Teak will, with annual oiling or left to silver. Pine, spruce and most other softwoods will not — two monsoons is typical. WPC looks similar, needs nothing and costs less than teak.
Are string lights worth it?+
For the money, they are the highest-impact item on any balcony. Specify IP65 rated at 2700K, and expect them to last three to five years outdoors rather than indefinitely.
How do I make a west-facing balcony usable?+
Shade on the west side: a light slatted screen, a retractable blind or a tall planting group. Between March and May a west-facing Mumbai balcony is 6–8 degrees hotter than the flat behind it at 4pm.
Can I do this in a rented flat?+
Yes — nothing here is fixed. Loose deck tiles, a freestanding bench, pots on feet and string lights hung from existing hooks or a tension wire. It comes with you when you leave.
