Planning the internals by arithmetic
| Garment type | Height needed | Depth | Allowance per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long hanging (sarees, coats, kurtas) | 1,500–1,700 mm | 600 mm | 600–900 mm of rail |
| Short hanging (shirts, trousers) | 1,000–1,100 mm | 600 mm | 900–1,200 mm of rail, two tiers |
| Folded (tees, knits, denim) | 300–350 mm per shelf | 500 mm | Four to six shelves |
| Drawers (inner wear, socks) | 150–200 mm each | 500 mm | Three drawers |
| Accessories (bags, belts, ties) | Variable | 350 mm | One 450 mm bay |
| Loft (seasonal, luggage) | 450–600 mm | 600 mm | Full width |
Add the rail lengths for the people using it, divide by the bays available, and the layout draws itself. This takes ten minutes and prevents the commonest wardrobe complaint: nowhere to fold.
The modern wardrobe palette
A 9 ft wardrobe is the largest object in most bedrooms, so its colour is a wall decision, not a furniture decision. Keep it within one step of the wall tone and put the interest inside.
- Oat
#E8E2D6— shutters — a half-step from the wall, so the plane recedes - Warm white
#F3F0EA— the surrounding wall - Oak
#A0784C— the gola profile and one open bay - Interior white
#F7F5F1— the carcass inside, so the contents are visible - Graphite
#2A2C2E— hinges, rails, the accessory hardware
Specification that decides whether it lasts
- 18 mm BWP for the carcass and 18 mm for shelves up to 900 mm span, 25 mm beyond that. An 1,100 mm shelf in 18 mm ply loaded with folded denim will bow within a year.
- Soft-close concealed hinges rated for the shutter weight, three per shutter below 1,800 mm and four above. A 2,400 mm full-height shutter on three hinges will drop at the top corner.
- A 450–600 mm loft integrated into the same shutter line, not a separate box above. It is the difference between a wardrobe and a wardrobe with a cupboard on top.
- Internal LED on a door sensor at 4000K, which costs ₹6,000–₹12,000 per wardrobe and is the upgrade people notice first in the morning.
What a modern wardrobe costs
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Carcass and shutters | BWP carcass, 18 mm, matt laminate shutters with gola profile | ₹1,48,000 |
| Internals | Rails, shelves, three drawers, an accessory bay, trouser pull-out | ₹46,000 |
| Loft | 450 mm loft across the full width with separate shutters | ₹28,000 |
| Lighting | Internal LED on a door sensor with a concealed driver | ₹12,000 |
| Mirror and extras | Inside-mounted full-length mirror on a slide, hooks, tie rack | ₹16,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹2,50,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. Internals are 18% of the cost and 100% of the daily experience. This is the line that should not be value-engineered.
Three wardrobe mistakes
- Equal bays. Dividing a 9 ft run into three 900 mm bays looks balanced on the elevation and gives you the wrong storage. Allocate by garment count.
- Too much long hanging. Most people need 600–900 mm of it per person. A full bay of long hanging wastes 700 mm of height under the garments.
- Depth below 550 mm. A hanger is 450 mm wide and needs 550 mm of internal depth to sit square. At 500 mm the shoulders touch the shutter and shirts crease.
Wardrobes in Mumbai flats
Two Mumbai-specific rules. First, never put a wardrobe back flat against an external or bathroom-adjacent wall — leave a 25 mm air gap, seal the carcass back and check for damp before installation, because the back panel is where a Mumbai wardrobe fails and the failure transfers into clothes. Second, plan for the monsoon: a closed wardrobe in August with no air movement will grow mildew on leather and on anything stored folded at the bottom. A ventilated plinth, a 40 mm gap at the back of each shelf, and a habit of leaving the shutters open for an hour a week is the practical answer. Where humidity is severe, a 100 g silica dehumidifier box per bay costs ₹300 and works.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a wardrobe cost per square foot?+
₹1,600–₹2,800 per sq ft of front elevation in BWP with laminate and mid-range internals, so a 9 ft × 9 ft wardrobe lands between ₹1.3 and ₹2.3 lakh before the loft, lighting and accessories. Acrylic or veneer fronts add 25–45%.
Hinged or sliding?+
Hinged wherever there is 750 mm of clear floor, because you see the whole wardrobe at once and lose no internal depth. Sliding only where the floor in front is tight. Sliding costs about 15% more and takes 60–80 mm off the depth.
What depth should a wardrobe be?+
600 mm external for hanging, which gives about 550 mm internal — the minimum for a hanger to sit square. 450 mm works only for shelved or folded storage, or for a sliding-front unit with side-hung rails.
Is a loft worth building?+
Yes. A 450–600 mm loft adds roughly 30–40% more volume for about 18% more cost, and in a Mumbai flat it is where the suitcases, the winter quilts and the Diwali crockery live. Integrate it into the same shutter line.
