Zoning a modern master
- The joinery wallWardrobe, dresser and TV panel resolved as one plane with a continuous groove line, one finish and one top rail height. Where the dresser sits, the shutter simply stops and the mirror takes over at the same plane. This is the difference between a designed master and three bought objects.
- The bed islandBed centred on the opposite wall with 750 mm both sides, floating clear of the joinery. A full-wall headboard panel at 1,100 mm, and nothing above it — no art, no shelf, no cabinet.
- The sit zoneA 1,400 × 1,000 mm rug, one lounge chair and a floor lamp in the corner with the best daylight. Defined by the rug alone; adding joinery here turns a master into a showroom.
- One circulation spineA single clear 900 mm route from door to bathroom, crossing nothing. In a master this route is used at 3am in the dark, and it should be walkable without touching anything.
The modern master palette
Larger rooms take a deeper base than a small bedroom can. One dark grounding tone is allowed here, applied to the joinery rather than the walls, so the room stays bright and the storage recedes.
- Warm white
#F2EFE9— walls, ceiling, headboard panel ground - Charcoal green
#3A3D3C— the joinery plane — wardrobe, dresser surround, TV panel - Mid oak
#9B7A52— dresser top, ledge, bed frame edge - Grey-green
#6F7D74— chair upholstery and the rug field - Linen
#D8CFC0— bedding, drapery, the quiet 70% of the room

How it is built
- 18 mm BWP carcass with a 1 mm matt laminate or PU-finished MDF shutter, run as a single line with a 4 mm shadow gap at the ceiling instead of a cornice.
- A dresser mirror set flush into the joinery plane, 6 mm back-painted glass in a rebate, with a vertical LED strip on each side at 3000K. Side-lit is the only mirror lighting that works on a face.
- Full-extension drawers in the dresser bank, 500 mm, on Blum Tandem or Hettich Quadro runners. Dresser drawers get opened twice a day for twenty years.
- A 1,800 × 2,400 mm rug of at least 12 mm pile in the sit zone. The zone exists only because the rug marks it, so all four chair legs must sit on it.

Three ways a modern master loses its discipline
- Two finishes on the joinery wall. A wood wardrobe next to a white dresser breaks the plane into objects and the zoning stops working. One finish, one line.
- A TV mounted on the wall above a console. In modern, the screen is recessed into the panel or on a flush mount with the cables inside the joinery. A bracket and a visible HDMI lead undoes the whole wall.
- Filling the sit zone with a second wardrobe. The commonest instinct in a big room; it converts a master into a walk-in with a bed in it.
What Mumbai master bedrooms are actually like
Most Mumbai masters in a 3BHK run 140–170 sq ft with an attached bathroom, a small utility-facing window and an external wall that takes the afternoon sun. That external wall is the one to keep free of joinery: it is the wall most likely to carry damp, and a wardrobe back against it will fail first. The bathroom door swing usually eats the corner you wanted for the chair, so check it before you plan the sit zone. Where the flat faces west, add an 80% blockout roller behind the sheer — a modern master with a big glazed wall in Mumbai is unusable between 3pm and 6pm from March to May without it.
Zone it, keep one material, and leave the third corner nearly empty. Other directions for the same room: Luxury master bedroom ideas · Minimalist master bedroom ideas. For rates and scope, see Wardrobe cost in Mumbai, or go back to all interior design ideas.
Frequently asked questions
How big does a master bedroom need to be?+
140 sq ft is the point at which the three zones fit — king bed with 750 mm both sides, a 12 ft joinery wall and a 1,400 mm corner. Below 120 sq ft you are designing a bedroom with a dresser, which is a different and perfectly good page.
Should a master bedroom have a TV?+
If you will use it, plan it into the joinery at 1,050 mm from floor to screen centre and recess it. The mistake is deciding later and bolting a bracket onto a finished panel.
What lighting does a master bedroom need?+
Four circuits: perimeter cove, two-way switched bedside, dresser side-lights and a low-level night circuit. Total around ₹38,000 in a 150 sq ft room including switching, and it is the cheapest thing on the list that changes daily life.
Is a wooden floor worth it in a master bedroom?+
Engineered oak over a moisture barrier works well in a bedroom because there is no water and little traffic. Budget ₹320–₹620 per sq ft laid. Solid wood in Mumbai humidity moves; laminate below ₹150 per sq ft will show at the joints within two monsoons.
