The commissioned pieces
- The bedA four-poster or a heavily headboarded bed in seasoned teak or sheesham, mortise-and-tenon jointed with drawbore pins. A four-poster needs 1,950–2,100 mm of post height plus clearance, so measure the slab before ordering. ₹1.6–₹3.2 lakh for good work.
- Jali-fronted wardrobeTeak frames with jali panels on the hanging bays and solid panels with internal liners on the folded bays. The ventilation is functional in Mumbai, and the framing gives the wardrobe a furniture quality that a flush shutter cannot.
- A worked dresser or mirrorOne carved or inlaid piece — a dresser with a mirror in a worked frame, or a standalone mirror over a plain console. This is where the second dose of craft goes, and it should be the only other carved object in the room.
- Brass light, low and warmWall lamps at 1,500 mm with mica or fabric shades, a hanging lamp on a chain, and no ceiling grid. The unevenness is the point: traditional rooms were lit by lamps, not by a lighting layout.
The traditional master palette
Richer than a secondary bedroom, with the walls warm and the depth coming from the timber. Colour lives in the quilt, the bolsters and the curtains, all of which change seasonally.
- Ivory lime
#EEDFC0— walls in a lime or textured finish - Teak
#5A3520— the bed, the wardrobe frames, the dresser - Deep teal
#1E4F45— the quilt and the curtain border - Madder
#9D2F2A— bolsters and the block-print layer - Brass
#B18A36— lamps, hardware, the mirror frame

Craft and climate specification
- Seasoned teak or sheesham at 8–10% moisture, carved before finishing, drawbore-pinned. A four-poster with bracket-and-screw joints will develop a wobble within two years of use.
- Jali openings under 20 mm with an internal dust liner on the folded bays, so the wardrobe ventilates without the contents collecting grit.
- Hand-block-printed cotton and mashru, treated for stain resistance, with a second seasonal set. This layer costs ₹40,000–₹80,000 and does more for the room than another ₹1 lakh of carving.
- Earthed solid brass lighting. Many decorative brass fittings arrive unearthed; specify a three-core connection, which matters more in a coastal flat than elsewhere.
What a traditional master costs
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Wardrobe | 12 ft, teak frames with jali and solid panels, internal liners, loft | ₹2,95,000 |
| Bed | Commissioned four-poster or carved-headboard king in teak or sheesham | ₹2,10,000 |
| Dresser | Carved or inlaid dresser with a worked mirror frame | ₹85,000 |
| Lighting | Brass wall lamps, hanging lamp, warm dimmable circuit | ₹55,000 |
| Textiles | Two seasonal sets, bolsters, curtains, a Bhadohi durrie | ₹62,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹7,07,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. The bed is a 8–12 week commission. Ordering it at design freeze rather than at fit-out is the difference between a handover on time and one that slips a month.
Three traditional master mistakes
- A four-poster under a false ceiling. Posts are 1,950–2,100 mm; a drop ceiling in a 9 ft 6 in slab leaves about 2,640 mm, which is workable, but a two-step ceiling is not. Check before ordering.
- Carving on the wardrobe as well as the bed. In 200 sq ft, two heavily carved pieces compete. Frame-and-panel with jali is the correct partner for a carved bed.
- Unseasoned timber. The cheapest carved beds are made from green wood and open at the joints within a monsoon. Ask for the moisture reading and reject anything above 12%.
Traditional furniture in a Mumbai master
Three site realities. A commissioned bed rarely knocks down entirely: posts and rails do, the headboard usually does not, and a 2,100 mm headboard has to pass your lift door and your flat's entrance turn. Measure both before the karigar starts. Second, teak in Mumbai gains moisture through the monsoon and loses it by February, so panels need expansion allowance in their frames; a rigidly fixed wide panel will split. Third, if a stone floor is going in, expect a 25–40 mm rise in level and confirm the additional load with the society in an older building. All three are ordinary, and all three are cheaper to plan for than to discover.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a carved teak bed cost?+
₹85,000 for a plain turned frame, ₹1.6–₹3.2 lakh for a well-carved four-poster in seasoned teak. The cost is karigar hours, not timber volume, so the depth of carving drives the number.
Will a four-poster fit under a 9 ft 6 in slab?+
Usually, with a flat ceiling or a peripheral cove. Posts run 1,950–2,100 mm, leaving 700–800 mm of clearance. A stepped false ceiling or a low pendant over the bed will not work with one.
Are jali wardrobe fronts practical?+
Yes, and in a coastal flat they are better than solid fronts because they ventilate. Use them on hanging bays and keep solid fronts with internal liners on the folded bays, so dust is not an issue.
Can I mix traditional furniture with a modern flat?+
It usually works better than a wholly traditional room. Keep the architecture, the ceiling and the wardrobe quiet, and let the commissioned bed and the textiles carry the tradition.
