The contemporary bathroom moves

  1. A seamless wall surfaceMicrocement or a bathroom-grade seamless system over a properly waterproofed and levelled substrate, at ₹380–₹800 per sq ft applied in a wet area. The absence of a grout grid is the single largest visual difference from a conventional bathroom.
  2. An arched mirror and a curved vanityA 600–900 mm arched or pill-shaped mirror, backlit, over a vanity with a 50–100 mm radius on its front corners. Together they cost ₹60,000–₹1.2 lakh and they set the room's period more clearly than anything else.
  3. Fluted glassA 10 mm fluted or reeded toughened panel for the shower screen. It diffuses, gives privacy, hides water marks better than clear glass and adds texture without adding a material.
  4. Warm metals, mixedAged brass or bronze brassware with matte black accessories, or the reverse. Chrome now reads as a 2010s bathroom more clearly than any other single element.

The contemporary bathroom palette

Warm mineral tones with the metal as the accent. Cool grey tile with chrome is the combination this palette is replacing, and swapping it is most of the update.

  • Warm sand #EAE0D2 — microcement to the walls and ceiling
  • Terracotta clay #B98F70 — the vanity front or a single niche interior
  • Travertine #CFC3B2 — the floor, in a large-format stone-look tile
  • Aged brass #A5844C — tap, shower, towel rail, mirror frame
  • Dark bronze #2A2723 — the drain, the door hardware, the second metal

Specification for a wet area

  • Bathroom-grade microcement over a fully waterproofed and primed substrate, with a two-part sealer. Standard microcement is not a wet-area product; specify the system, the primer and the sealer by name and get the warranty in writing.
  • PVD-finished brassware in brass or bronze, not lacquered. Lacquer wears through at the handle in a daily-use bathroom within two years. PVD holds in coastal air.
  • 10 mm fluted toughened glass with polished edges, fixed in a channel. Fluted glass hides limescale far better than clear, which in Mumbai's hard water is a practical advantage as well as a stylistic one.
  • A curved vanity front formed on a flexible core with a solid-surface or laminated finish, not a faceted approximation. In a small room the curve is at eye level and the facets show.

What a contemporary bathroom costs

45 sq ft bathroom, 2026 contemporary specification, full rebuild, Mumbai, ex-GST
ElementSpecification2026 Mumbai cost
Wall and floor finishesMicrocement to walls, large-format stone-look floor tile, sealed₹1,10,000
Vanity and mirror1,000 mm curved-front vanity with a stone top, backlit arched mirror₹78,000
Sanitaryware and brasswareWall-hung WC with concealed cistern, basin, PVD brass mixer set₹1,25,000
Civil and waterproofingStrip-out, membrane, ponding test, falls, substrate levelling₹62,000
Shower screen10 mm fluted toughened panel in a channel with a stabiliser₹48,000
Lighting and ventilationWall wash, mirror backlight, niche LED, timed ducted exhaust₹32,000

Total at this specification: ₹4,55,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. Microcement in a wet area is a specialist application. The substrate preparation is about a third of its cost and skipping it is how the finish fails.

Three contemporary bathroom mistakes

  1. Non-wet-area microcement in a shower. The decorative version is not the same product. It will craze and discolour within a year in a Mumbai shower.
  2. An arched mirror with a square vanity and chrome taps. One contemporary element in an otherwise 2015 bathroom reads as an add-on rather than an update.
  3. Three metals. Brass tap, chrome shower and black towel rail is not mixing metals, it is buying them separately. Two, each repeated.

Contemporary finishes in a Mumbai bathroom

Microcement in a Mumbai bathroom is entirely dependent on the waterproofing beneath it and on the substrate being level and dry. That means a full strip-out, a membrane, a 24-hour ponding test and a levelling coat before the finish goes on — a sequence that takes about ten working days inside society hours before the decorative work even starts. Get the applicator's warranty in writing and confirm they have done wet areas, not just feature walls. Hard water is the second factor: Mumbai's supply leaves visible scale on clear glass and on polished brassware, which is a practical argument for fluted glass and for a brushed rather than polished metal finish. Finally, if the flat is a rental or a short-term hold, tiles are the more sensible choice; microcement is a commitment.

Lose the grout grid, warm the metal, and round one corner. Other directions for the same room: Indian traditional bathroom ideas · Budget bathroom ideas. For rates and scope, see Bathroom renovation cost in Mumbai, or go back to all interior design ideas.

Frequently asked questions

Is microcement safe in a shower?+

The wet-area system is, with the correct primer, two coats and a two-part sealer over sound waterproofing. The decorative grade sold for feature walls is not, and it is the source of most microcement failure stories.

Why fluted glass instead of clear?+

It gives privacy, adds texture, and hides limescale, which in Mumbai's hard water is a weekly nuisance on clear glass. It costs about 25% more than clear toughened and it is the detail that most says 2026.

What is replacing chrome?+

Aged or brushed brass and dark bronze, in a PVD finish, usually paired with matte black accessories. Polished chrome with a white gloss vanity is the clearest marker of a 2012–2018 bathroom.

Are curved vanities practical?+

Yes, and in a small bathroom a radiused front corner is safer at a circulation pinch than a square one. It adds ₹12,000–₹25,000 to the vanity, and it must be a formed curve rather than a faceted one.
