Seven of these eight savings are worth taking. Two are not, and both are about the wardrobe — which is the pattern in every budget bedroom we have costed.
A budget master palette
With the joinery plain and the ceiling flat, paint is carrying the room. Two tones and one good curtain do the work that a panelled wall would have done at ten times the price.
- Warm white
#F2EFE8— three walls and the ceiling - Deep sage
#4E5F58— the wall behind the bed - Oat laminate
#D9D0C0— wardrobe shutters - Warm grey
#A39889— curtains, bedlinen and the bolsters - Charcoal
#2B2D2E— handles, curtain rod, the two wall readers

Getting a master's worth out of the money
- MR ply carcass with a BWP base rail and BWP anywhere within a metre of the bathroom wall. The hybrid saves around 20% and puts the moisture-resistant board where the moisture is.
- A fold-down flap dresser inside the wardrobe run, 400 mm deep with a mirror on the inside face and a lit shelf behind. ₹14,000 against ₹45,000 for a separate dressing unit.
- Branded soft-close hinges and channels throughout. A 9 ft wardrobe with a loft takes about 22 hinges; at ₹450 each that is ₹10,000 and it is the line that should not move.
- A surface cove profile with an LED strip instead of a gypsum cove, ₹180–₹340 per running foot against ₹600–₹900, with most of the same effect.
A ₹1.8 lakh master bedroom, itemised
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Wardrobe | 9 ft to ceiling with loft, MR ply carcass, matt laminate, branded hardware | ₹96,000 |
| Bed | Readymade king with hydraulic storage | ₹38,000 |
| Flap dresser | Fold-down dressing flap inside the wardrobe line with a mirror and light | ₹14,000 |
| Lighting | Surface cove profile, two-way bedside circuit, wardrobe strip | ₹14,000 |
| Paint and curtains | Two tones, washable emulsion, cotton-blend curtains on a plain rod | ₹18,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹1,80,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. Phase it: wardrobe and paint in month one, bed and curtains in month three. The dresser flap has to be built with the wardrobe.
Three false economies in a master
- A 7 ft wardrobe. It saves ₹28,000 and loses about a third of the capacity, in the room where the household's clothes actually live.
- Unbranded hardware on 22 hinges. Saves ₹11,000 and produces sagging doors by year two. It is the most reliable way to make a budget interior look like one.
- No lighting budget. A ₹1.8 lakh master lit by a single ceiling fitting looks unfinished. ₹14,000 of cove and two-way bedside switching changes the room every night.
Budget master bedrooms in Mumbai
Masters in Mumbai almost always have an attached bathroom, which means one wall is a wet wall and a second is usually external. Both need checking for damp before the wardrobe is built, and treating one costs ₹8,000–₹18,000 — money that must be inside the budget, not outside it. Put the wardrobe on the internal wall wherever the plan allows, and if it must go on the wet wall, use a BWP back, a 25 mm air gap and a ventilated plinth. The second local factor is the beam: most Mumbai masters have one crossing the ceiling, and placing the wardrobe under it costs nothing while placing the bed under it costs headroom over the pillows. Plan around it rather than ceiling over it, which is a ₹28,000 way to lose 150 mm.

Frequently asked questions
How much wardrobe can ₹1 lakh buy?+
About 9–10 ft to the ceiling with a loft, in MR ply with matt laminate and branded soft-close hardware. Acrylic or PU fronts on the same run would be ₹1.5–₹1.8 lakh, which is the clearest example of finish versus substance in a bedroom.
Is a readymade king bed a compromise?+
Not much of one at ₹35,000–₹50,000 from an established brand with hydraulic storage. Check the base board thickness and the strut rating. Bespoke is worth it only for a non-standard size or a specific headboard design.
What should I do instead of a TV panel?+
A wall bracket with a slim white or painted cable trunking, or a chase cut into the wall before painting, which costs about ₹3,500 and is invisible. The ₹78,000 panel adds cable management and a surface; the chase adds the cable management alone.
Can I add the missing items later?+
The headboard, the TV panel and the dresser can all be added later without touching the wardrobe. The electrical and the cove cannot — both involve chasing walls — so do those in the first phase even on a tight budget.
