What to include and what to skip
| Item | Full spec | Budget spec | Saves | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shoe storage | 8 ft tilt-out unit, ₹86,000 | 4 ft at 250 mm depth | ₹52,000 | Take it, if the count allows |
| Bench | Built-in, ₹28,000 | A stool, or nothing | ₹26,000 | Take it, unless someone needs to sit |
| Drop shelf and hooks | Joinery shelf, ₹24,000 | Backing board and hooks | ₹15,000 | Take it |
| Mirror | Full-length framed, ₹20,000 | Frameless 1,400 mm | ₹12,000 | Take it |
| Wall treatment | Panelled, ₹42,000 | Paint plus the mirror | ₹38,000 | Take it |
| Mat well | Recessed, ₹22,000 | Good loose coir mat | ₹20,000 | Take it, if the floor is done |
| Ventilation | Perforated back | 20 mm gaps top and bottom | ₹0 | Do not skip |
| Light and socket | Two wall washers, ₹18,000 | One light plus a socket | ₹11,000 | Take it |
The ventilation row costs nothing either way. A sealed shoe cabinet in Mumbai is unpleasant within a month, and no amount of finish compensates for it.
A budget entrance palette
Paint and a mirror. In a windowless entrance a large mirror does more than any wall treatment, because it borrows light from the room beyond.

#F3F0E9— the walls - Deep green
#4B5A52— the shoe cabinet, marking the zone - Oak laminate

Where the small budget goes
- A 250 mm deep cabinet with tilt-out shoe fittings, which hold three pairs per compartment against one per shelf at the same depth. ₹1,800–₹3,600 per fitting and worth every rupee in a shallow unit.
- A perforated back panel or 20 mm gaps top and bottom. Free at build time, and the difference between an entrance that smells and one that does not.
- BWP for the bottom 150 mm of the shoe cabinet, MR ply above. Wet shoes in July and mopping both reach the base.
- One warm wall light on its own switch plus a socket at shelf height, ₹7,000. The separate switch is what makes it the light you use at 11pm.
A ₹62,000 entrance, itemised
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Shoe cabinet | 4 ft at 250 mm depth, tilt-out fittings, ventilated back, MR ply with BWP base | ₹34,000 |
| Hooks and drop shelf | Backing board, six hooks at 1,650 mm, 200 mm shelf with a lip | ₹9,000 |
| Mirror | 1,400 × 450 mm frameless mirror on the return wall | ₹8,000 |
| Light and socket | One warm wall light on a separate switch plus a socket at shelf height | ₹7,000 |
| Mat | Good coir or aluminium loose mat at the threshold | ₹4,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹62,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. Phase it if needed: the cabinet first, hooks and mirror in week two. The light needs chasing, so do it with any painting.
Three budget entrance mistakes
- A sealed shoe cabinet. It costs nothing to perforate the back or gap it top and bottom, and everything if you do not.
- A 400 mm deep cabinet. It narrows the entrance to the point where two people cannot pass while one removes shoes. 250 mm with tilt-out fittings holds nearly as much.
- Putting it behind the door swing. The 900 mm arc behind an inward-opening door is unusable. Measure the swing before deciding the wall.
Budget entrances in Mumbai flats
Most Mumbai flats open directly into the living room with a wall on one side, and that wall is the entrance zone unless the door swings against it — in which case check whether the door can be re-hung the other way, which costs ₹3,500–₹6,000 and often solves everything. Watch for the intercom, the DB and the meter, which in many buildings are inside the flat on exactly that wall; plan around them rather than over them. Shoe count is the real decision: Indian households keep more footwear indoors than most, particularly now that societies discourage shoes outside the door, so count before sizing the cabinet. And in a monsoon city the mat is a functional item, not a decorative one: budget a proper coir or aluminium one rather than a rubber sheet.

Frequently asked questions
How many shoes does a 4 ft cabinet hold?+
18–24 pairs at 250 mm depth with tilt-out fittings and a height of 1,050 mm. A family of four with guests typically needs 28–35 pairs of capacity, so size up if the wall allows.
Is 250 mm deep enough for shoes?+
With tilt-out fittings, yes — they hold three pairs per compartment at that depth. Plain shelves at 250 mm hold one pair deep and waste the volume, which is why the fittings are worth the money.
Do I need a bench in the entrance?+
If anyone in the household is over fifty or has mobility difficulty, it is the most appreciated item in the flat. Otherwise a stool does, and the ₹26,000 is better spent on shoe capacity.
What is the cheapest useful entrance improvement?+
A hook rail and a drop shelf with a socket, at about ₹9,000. It stops bags, keys, post and umbrellas migrating into the living room, which is most of what an entrance is for.
