Resolving five functions into one plane
- Shoe storage, ventilated, floor to 1,050 mm. Tilt-out shoe racks at 250 mm depth hold more per running foot than shelves and keep the unit shallow. Perforate the back panel or leave a 20 mm gap top and bottom; a sealed shoe cupboard in Mumbai humidity is unpleasant within weeks.
- A drop shelf and a socket at 1,050 mm. A 250 mm deep shelf with a 20 mm lip, a socket beside it and a small tray. Everything that comes out of a pocket lands here instead of on the dining table.
- A place to lean, or better, to sit. A 400 mm deep bench or a 300 mm perch at 600 mm height. Anyone over fifty in the household will tell you this is the most valued item in the foyer.
- A full-length mirror on the return wall. Not on the door, not opposite the door — on the wall you pass as you leave, where it gets used and does not bounce the entrance back at itself.
The modern foyer palette
A foyer is seen for eight seconds and sets the tone for the flat. One clearly resolved material with a single contrast reads better than a busy composition in a small area.
- Warm white
#EFEBE3— walls, continuing into the living area - Graphite
#35393B— the shoe unit body, grounding the entrance - Oak
#AE8351— the drop shelf, the bench top, the handle groove - Stone
#BBB3A4— the floor inlay band or the mat recess - Brass
#C9A227— one line — the shelf edge, or the hook rail
Specification for a Mumbai entrance
- Tilt-out shoe fittings at 250 mm depth, which take three pairs per unit and keep the cabinet shallow enough not to narrow the entrance. Hettich and Hafele both make them at ₹1,800–₹3,600 per unit.
- BWP ply, not MR, for the base of the shoe unit. Wet shoes in July, mopping, and the occasional monsoon puddle under the door all reach the bottom 150 mm.
- A recessed mat well at the threshold, 15–18 mm deep with a coir or aluminium mat set flush. It catches the water and grit and removes the tripping edge of a loose mat.
- One warm 3000K downlight or a wall light at 1,900 mm, not a ceiling light in the centre of a 28 sq ft space. Light the wall plane, not the floor.
What a modern foyer costs
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Shoe unit and bench | 7 ft run, tilt-out shoe fittings, ventilated back, bench at 600 mm | ₹86,000 |
| Wall panel and mirror | Fluted or plain panelled return with a full-length mirror | ₹42,000 |
| Drop shelf and hooks | 250 mm shelf at 1,050 mm with a socket, plus a hook rail | ₹24,000 |
| Lighting | Two wall-washing fittings on a separate switch, 3000K | ₹18,000 |
| Flooring | Recessed mat well with a flush coir or aluminium mat, stone border | ₹22,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹1,92,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. The mat well requires the floor to be opened, so it has to be decided before the flooring goes down, not after.
Three foyer mistakes
- Undersizing the shoe storage. Every foyer we have redone was too small for the shoes. Count what the household owns, add half, and then add the guests' pairs that live by the door.
- A sealed shoe cabinet. No ventilation means the entrance smells within a month in a humid city. Perforate the back or leave gaps top and bottom.
- A mirror facing the main door. Many families avoid it on vaastu grounds, and practically it reflects the corridor and the lift lobby into the flat. Put it on the return wall.
Mumbai entrances specifically
Most Mumbai flats open directly into the living room with no foyer at all, so the foyer has to be created — usually as a 900 mm deep zone marked by a change of floor, a partition or simply the shoe unit itself. Watch the main door swing: almost all Indian flat doors open inwards, which sterilises the 900 mm arc behind them, and that arc is exactly where people want to put the shoe cabinet. Either keep the unit outside the arc or change the door to open outward, which needs society permission because the door then swings into the common lobby. Check also whether the meter box, the intercom handset and the DB are on that wall; all three are commonly in the entrance and all three have to stay accessible.

Frequently asked questions
How much shoe storage does a family need?+
Roughly 8–10 pairs per adult and 4–6 per child, plus a few for guests. For a family of four that is 28–35 pairs, which needs about 7 ft of run at 1,050 mm high with tilt-out fittings, or a taller unit over a shorter run.
Can I create a foyer if the flat does not have one?+
Yes, with a 900 mm zone defined by a floor change, a half-height unit or a fluted screen. It needs to stay visually open or the living room shrinks. The screen costs ₹1,100–₹2,400 per sq ft; the floor change costs almost nothing if it is done with the rest of the flooring.
Should the foyer have its own light switch?+
Yes. It is the light you use at 11pm without waking the house, and it should be separate from the living room circuit. Two wall-washers at 3000K are better than one ceiling downlight.
What flooring works in an entrance?+
The same flooring as the living room, with a recessed mat well at the threshold. A different tile in the entrance dates quickly and visually shortens the room beyond it. The mat well is the functional part.
