What fits in 900 mm beside a door
| Element | Depth | Capacity or function | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tilt-out shoe cabinet | 250 mm | 24 pairs over 6 ft at 1,050 mm high | Ventilate the back |
| Full-height slim shoe tower | 300 mm | 34 pairs over 3 ft to the ceiling | Where the wall is short |
| Drop shelf with socket | 200 mm | Keys, phone, mask, post | At 1,050 mm, with a 20 mm lip |
| Hook rail | 60 mm | Four to six hooks for bags and umbrellas | At 1,650 mm, above the shelf |
| Full-length mirror | 25 mm | Check before leaving | On the return wall, not facing the door |
| Recessed mat well | 18 mm below floor | Catches water and grit | Decide before flooring is laid |
Total depth used: 250–300 mm. That is what makes this work in a flat with no hall.
Palette for an entrance inside a living room
The entrance strip sits inside the living room, so it should use the living room's palette with one shift in material — typically a darker cabinet or a textured panel — to mark the change without announcing it.
- Chalk
#F2EFE8— walls, continuous with the living area - Deep graphite
#3E4441— the slim shoe cabinet, marking the zone - Oak
#B3875A— the drop shelf and the hook rail backing board - Sand
#CFC6B6— the floor inlay band at the threshold - Ink
#1F2122— hooks, the mirror frame, the light
What to build in 900 mm
- A 250 mm deep cabinet with tilt-out shoe fittings, which hold three pairs each and need only 250 mm. Standard shelves at this depth hold one pair deep and waste the volume.
- A perforated or slatted back panel, or a 20 mm gap top and bottom. This is more important in a shallow cabinet than a deep one, because the shoes sit closer to the shutter.
- A 200 mm drop shelf with a 20 mm lip and a socket beside it, at 1,050 mm. The lip is what stops keys sliding off, and it costs nothing to add at build.
- A recessed mat well at the threshold with a flush aluminium or coir mat, which also visually marks where the entrance zone ends and the living room begins.
Costing a 900 mm entrance strip
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Shoe cabinet | 6 ft run at 250 mm depth, tilt-out fittings, ventilated back | ₹44,000 |
| Hooks and drop shelf | Backing board, six hooks at 1,650 mm, 200 mm shelf with a lip | ₹12,000 |
| Mirror | Full-length 1,600 × 450 mm on the return wall, framed | ₹11,000 |
| Light and socket | One wall light on a separate switch plus a socket at shelf height | ₹9,000 |
| Mat well | Recessed 18 mm mat well with a flush mat at the threshold | ₹8,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹84,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. No partition, no screen, no floor build-up. Everything here stays within 300 mm of the wall.
Three mistakes when there is no foyer
- Building a partition. A 1,200 mm screen beside the door costs ₹40,000 and takes 8 sq ft out of a living room that needed it. Mark the zone with the floor instead.
- A 400 mm deep shoe cabinet. It narrows the entrance to the point where two people cannot pass while one is taking off shoes. 250 mm with tilt-out fittings holds nearly as much.
- Putting it behind the door swing. The 900 mm arc behind an inward-opening door is unusable. Measure the swing before deciding which wall the cabinet goes on.
Where the 900 mm is in a Mumbai flat
In most 1BHK and 2BHK plans the main door opens inward into the living room, with a wall on one side and open space on the other. The wall side is your entrance strip, unless the door swings against it — in which case check whether the door can be re-hung to swing the other way, which costs ₹3,500–₹6,000 and often solves the whole problem. Watch for the intercom handset, the DB and the electricity meter, which in many Mumbai buildings are inside the flat on exactly this wall; plan the cabinet around them with a hinged access panel rather than building over them. If the flat is on a lower floor with a common corridor, a recessed mat well matters more than usual: in July that corridor is wet, and every visitor brings some of it in.

Frequently asked questions
How deep should a shoe cabinet be?+
250 mm with tilt-out fittings, or 300 mm with shelves if you have the depth to spare. A tilt-out unit at 250 mm holds three pairs per compartment; a 350 mm shelf holds two and takes 100 mm more of your entrance.
Should the entrance be visually separated from the living room?+
Marked, not separated. A floor inlay band, a change of tone on the wall, or simply the cabinet itself is enough. A physical partition in a small flat costs more area than the separation is worth.
Where should the mirror go?+
On the wall you pass as you leave, not opposite the door. Practically it gets used more there, and many families prefer not to have a mirror facing the main door on vaastu grounds.
Can I put the shoe cabinet outside the flat?+
Many societies prohibit it, and where it is tolerated it is often an informal arrangement that changes with the committee. Assume the shoes have to come inside and plan for them; anything you get outside the door is a bonus.
