The common finishes
| Finish | Rate / sq ft | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Fine sand / orange peel | ₹75–130 | Subtle grain; hides plaster defects |
| Travertine / stone effect | ₹160–280 | Deep relief, natural stone reference |
| Metallic and pearl | ₹180–340 | Shifts with light; strong feature wall |
| Venetian / lime plaster | ₹280–450 | Polished, translucent depth; skilled trade |
| Concrete / microcement effect | ₹220–420 | Flat industrial look, seamless |
Where it works
On one wall, not four. Texture earns its money as a focal surface — behind a bed, behind a sofa, in a foyer, on a TV wall — where the relief catches light and gives a plain room some depth. Applied across a whole flat it becomes oppressive and dates quickly. It also works best under directional light: a profile light or a grazing downlight 300 mm off the wall makes a ₹200 per sq ft texture look like ₹500; flat ambient light makes it look like a mistake.
The Mumbai dust question
Any relief collects dust, and Mumbai's air delivers plenty of it. A deep travertine or heavy trowel finish in a room with an open window facing a road will need brushing down every few months and cannot be wiped clean. Keep deep textures out of kitchens, out of children's rooms and away from high-traffic corridors where shoulders and bags will catch them.
The applicator matters more than the product. Most texture systems are sold with a trained-applicator network, and the same material laid by a general painter looks flat and uneven. Ask who is applying it, see another wall they have finished, and expect to pay ₹1,500–4,000 for a sample panel.
Texture paint versus wallpaper versus panelling
Wallpaper gives pattern and precision, is faster to install and can be removed. Texture is permanent, seamless, and has genuine physical relief that no print can match. Fluted or slatted panelling gives the deepest relief of all and costs ₹450–1,200 per sq ft. Choose by how much depth the wall actually needs. See choosing paint colours and residential interiors.
Frequently asked questions
Is texture paint more expensive than wallpaper?+
Comparable at the lower end and more at the upper. Fine textures at ₹75–130 per sq ft undercut mid-range wallpaper; Venetian plaster at ₹280–450 exceeds most of it. The difference is that texture is permanent and wallpaper is not.
Can texture paint be removed?+
Not easily. It has to be scraped back and the wall re-puttied, at ₹45–90 per sq ft before repainting. Treat it as a ten-year decision, which is the strongest argument for keeping it to one wall.
Does texture paint hide wall defects?+
Minor undulations, yes — that is a genuine advantage in an older flat with wavy plaster. Cracks, no. A structural or settlement crack will reappear through any texture within a season.
Is texture paint suitable for a kitchen or bathroom?+
Generally no. Relief collects oil film in a kitchen and cannot be scrubbed, and moisture in a bathroom will find any weak point. Use a washable emulsion, tile or a slab instead.
