What is MDF?

Medium density fibreboard — the panel that machines like butter and hates standing water.

Why joinery shops love it

Plywood has a grain direction, voids and veneer overlaps; MDF has none of those. A CNC router cuts a clean edge in MDF that needs no filling, a moulded shaker profile holds a crisp arris, and a sprayed PU finish lies flat because the substrate is flat. Every fluted panel, every routed headboard and most painted wardrobe fronts in Indian homes are MDF underneath.

Where it fails

  • Standing water. MDF wicks moisture through its cut edge and swells irreversibly. There is no drying it back.
  • Screw holding under load. A screw into an MDF edge holds once; repeated loading strips it. Hinges into MDF need proper inserts or a ply rail behind.
  • Long unsupported shelves. An 18 mm MDF shelf over 750 mm will sag under books within a year. Use ply or add a front lip.

Grades sold in India

Three matter. Standard interior MDF is the default. Moisture-resistant MDF, dyed green through the core, buys you slower swelling and nothing more. Fire-retardant MDF, usually red, appears in commercial specifications and carries a surcharge of 60–90%. Ask also for the emission class: E1 is the normal Indian standard and E0 is available at a small premium, which is worth taking in a bedroom or a children's room where the joinery is large relative to the volume of air.

MDF, HDHMR and plywood

HDHMR is a denser cousin with better moisture behaviour and better screw holding, at roughly 1.6 times the price. Plywood — BWP or BWR — is stronger in bending and far better with water, but it does not machine as cleanly and its edge needs banding or filling. The usual professional answer is a hybrid: ply carcass, MDF or HDHMR shutter faces, with the whole assembly edge-sealed.

That is exactly how we build painted and fluted joinery — see wardrobe design and the materials guide for the full build-up and what each layer costs.

Frequently asked questions

Is MDF better than plywood?+

For a routed or sprayed shutter face, yes — it machines cleaner and paints flatter. For a carcass, a wet area or anything carrying load, no. Most good joinery uses both, each where it is stronger.

Can MDF be used in a kitchen?+

As a shutter face away from water, with every edge and cut-out sealed, yes. As a carcass under a sink, no. Moisture-resistant grades help but do not change the basic behaviour at an unsealed edge.

Does MDF hold screws well?+

Into the face, adequately. Into the edge, poorly under repeated load — which is where hinges go. Use confirmat screws, threaded inserts or a plywood rail bonded behind the hinge line.

Is MDF safe to use indoors?+

Look for E1 or E0 low-emission grades, which cap formaldehyde release. Sealed and laminated panels emit very little in service; the exposure risk is mostly to the people cutting it, which is a workshop dust-extraction issue.
