The standard it sits in

IS 303 covers general-purpose plywood in two bonding grades — MR and BWR. BWR is the upper of the two. It is tested by cycling in water at 60°C rather than the 72-hour boil that IS 710 demands, which is exactly the difference in service life you should expect. Note the trap: a sheet can legitimately be marked “IS 303 BWR” and be a perfectly good product, while a sheet marked simply “IS 303” may be the MR grade.

The mis-selling problem

“Waterproof ply” is not a grade. It is a phrase, and it appears on BWR quotations constantly because the two grades sound alike and the sheets look identical once laminated. The gap is ₹25–45 per sq ft, which across a 2BHK of joinery is ₹35,000–60,000 — a meaningful sum to shave from a quotation without the client noticing. Check the branded edge, not the invoice description, and check it before lamination.

Our own practice is simple: BWR is acceptable for dry bedroom and living-room joinery in inland suburbs such as Powai, Mulund or Thane, and we specify BWP everywhere else. If a quotation is silent on grade, assume the cheapest one that fits the description. One further check worth two minutes on site: weigh the sheet. A 19 mm hardwood BWR panel of 8 × 4 ft runs roughly 30–34 kg; a light sheet has a poplar or soft filler core whatever its stamp says, and will neither hold a hinge screw nor stay flat over a 7 ft shutter. See MR ply for the grade below this one and the materials guide for the full ladder. For joinery pricing, wardrobe costs in Mumbai.

Frequently asked questions

Is BWR plywood waterproof?+

No. It is moisture resistant. It tolerates humid air and a wiped-up splash; it does not tolerate water standing against an edge or a slow leak under a sink. Those conditions need IS 710 BWP.

Can I use BWR plywood for a kitchen?+

We would not. The savings over BWP on a typical Mumbai kitchen are ₹9,000–14,000, and the failure mode — a swollen base unit under the sink — costs several times that to put right in an occupied flat.

How do I tell BWR from BWP on site?+

Read the edge branding: IS 303 is BWR or MR, IS 710 is BWP. Beyond that, a boil test on an offcut separates them within a few hours. Any supplier who resists you keeping an offcut is telling you something.

Is BWR plywood good for wardrobes?+

In a dry, inland flat, yes — it is a sensible saving on bedroom joinery. In a seafront building or on a wall that backs onto a bathroom, put the money back into BWP.
