How to use them

  1. Count your garments first and match the count to the bays rather than choosing an elevation you like.
  2. Put the drawer bank between 2 ft 6 in and 4 ft 6 in. Below the knee it is ignored; above eye level it cannot be seen into.
  3. Use a light internal laminate. You cannot find what you cannot see, and dark internals waste the storage you paid for.
  4. Split the loft. Two or four compartments rather than one long shelf, so a suitcase can be handled by one person.

Three internals decisions that matter

  • Double-stacked short hanging. It doubles capacity per foot of width and most wardrobes do not use it.
  • Full-extension channels on the drawers. Three-quarter extension loses the back third of every drawer permanently.
  • One lockable drawer. Documents and jewellery, designed in rather than added as a safe bolted to a shelf.

Frequently asked questions

How many garments does a hanging bay hold?+

A 2 ft wide bay holds roughly 22 to 26 shirts on slim hangers, or 14 to 18 heavier garments. Long hanging at 5 ft clear takes saris, coats and gowns; short hanging at 3 ft 6 in takes shirts and trousers folded over. Count what you own and divide.

What shelf spacing should I use?+

Twelve to fourteen inches for folded clothes. Below 12 in the stack topples when you pull from it; above 14 in you waste height. Adjustable shelves are worth the small premium because what you fold changes over a decade.

Is a loft worth having?+

Yes — it is the cheapest cubic footage in a Mumbai flat. Run it to the slab above the lintel line, split it into compartments under 3 ft wide, and coordinate the shutter with the false ceiling drop. A pull-down rail makes the space genuinely usable rather than archival.

What internal depth do I need?+

Two feet for hanging, measured clear inside the carcass. At 1 ft 6 in a hanger sits at an angle and the shutter presses on every shoulder. Eighteen inches is correct for shelving and shoes, and copying it into a hanging bay is the most common internals mistake.

Should the internals be quoted separately?+

They should be itemised, whether or not they are separately priced. 'Wardrobe with internals' can mean two shelves and a rail. Ask for the bay layout, the drawer count, the channel rating and the rail type on the quotation, as on these elevations.
