How to use them
- Carve the closet from the bedroom, not in addition to it. Check the bedroom still measures 12 ft across afterwards.
- Leave it open rather than shuttered at 6x6. Shutters in a small closet consume the aisle you need.
- Specify 4000K lighting at CRI above 90. Below that, colours do not read true and the closet fails at its one job.
- Plan mechanical ventilation. An enclosed closet in Mumbai needs air movement or the clothes will tell you.
Three things closets get wrong
- An island in an 8 ft room with 3 ft aisles. It looks right on a plan and you cannot open a drawer.
- Shoe storage below knee height. It becomes a pile within a month; eye-level display works.
- No seat. A dressing room without somewhere to sit is a corridor with shelves.

Frequently asked questions
Is a walk-in closet worth the space it takes?+
Only above about 8 by 8 ft. Below that, a 10 ft run of wardrobe along a bedroom wall holds more per square foot than a small walk-in, because a walk-in spends a third of its area on aisle. The walk-in wins on experience, not on capacity.
How wide should the aisle be?+
Three feet minimum, 3 ft 6 in if there are hanging bays on both sides, because you need to turn with an armful of clothes and open a drawer without stepping back into a rail. Around an island, 3 ft 6 in on all four sides.
Does a closet need ventilation?+
In Mumbai, yes. An enclosed room full of fabric with no air movement will smell of damp by the end of the first monsoon and will grow mould on leather. A small exhaust fan on a timer, or a louvre to an adjacent ventilated space, solves it.
Open shelving or shutters?+
Open in a walk-in, shuttered in a wardrobe. Once you are inside a dedicated room, shutters cost you aisle and add nothing except dust protection, which a closed door already provides. Keep shutters for the shoe and accessory bays if you want visual calm.
What does a walk-in closet cost?+
Rs 1.8 to 4.5 lakh for an 8 by 8 ft closet at a premium specification, ex-GST, including hanging, shelving, a drawer island and lighting. The 10 by 12 dressing room with a stone-topped island and a lit mirror runs Rs 5 to 12 lakh.
