How to use them
- Face a wall, not a window. Glare on a screen ruins more working days than a missing view does.
- Borrow the 3 ft of chair clearance from the room's walkway, not from the desk depth.
- Use closed storage when the office is in a living room. Open shelves read as clutter after six in the evening.
- Give each person separate lighting and a separate circuit on a shared desk pair.
Three things that decide a home office
- Desk length. A 3 ft 6 in desk works for a laptop; add a monitor and you need 4 ft 6 in.
- What is behind you on a call. Plan the camera background deliberately rather than discovering it.
- Whether you can close it. An office you can shut is worth more than an office that is slightly larger.

Frequently asked questions
How big should a home office desk be?+
Five feet by two feet for a single monitor and a laptop, six feet if you use two monitors or spread paper. Three feet six inches is the practical floor and works only for a laptop. Depth of 24 inches is the minimum for a monitor at a comfortable viewing distance.
Should the desk face a window?+
No. Face a wall or sit perpendicular to the window. A screen against a bright window forces the pupils to fight the contrast all day, and a window behind you makes every video call a silhouette. A view is worth less than eight comfortable hours.
Can two people work in one bedroom?+
Yes, with an acoustic divider between the desks, headsets and separate lighting. What makes it fail is not space but sound: two simultaneous calls in one room is intolerable without a physical baffle. Plan H-3 shows a 1 ft 6 in divider above desk height.
What lighting does a desk need?+
Around 500 lux at the work surface, from the side opposite your writing hand, at 4000K. A single ceiling light directly overhead puts your own shadow on the page and reflects off the screen. A linear glare-controlled fitting over the desk is the cleanest answer.
What does a home office cost?+
Rs 60,000 to 1.5 lakh for a fitted corner with desk, storage and lighting; Rs 2 to 5 lakh for a dedicated room with a storage wall, credenza and acoustic treatment. The chair is separate and is the one item worth overspending on.
