How to use them

  1. Locate the existing trap and stack first. In a non-sunk bathroom they are effectively fixed and the layout has to work around them.
  2. Separate wet from dry as soon as the area allows. A fixed 2 ft glass screen costs little and changes the room daily.
  3. Confirm the WC rough-in against the model you have bought, not against a generic 305 mm.
  4. Build the niche during masonry. Cutting one afterwards breaches the waterproofing membrane.

Three small-bathroom decisions

  • Wall-hung fixtures. Visible floor under a WC and vanity makes a 25 sq ft room read considerably larger and lets you clean it.
  • A concealed cistern. It gains 8 in of depth, and the carrier frame must go in before the wall is built.
  • A walk-in shower with no door. Above 4 ft of opening you need no door, and therefore no drip seal to fail.

Frequently asked questions

What is the smallest usable bathroom?+

Five by five feet, or 25 sq ft. That takes a WC, a basin and a 3 by 3 ft shower zone without the fixtures colliding. Below that — a 4 by 6 ft strip, which some Mumbai flats have — something has to go, usually the vanity, replaced by a wall-hung basin.

Is separating wet and dry worth it?+

It is the single biggest improvement available in a 35 sq ft bathroom. A fixed 8 mm glass screen keeps the WC and vanity dry, which means the floor is usable barefoot at any time and the joinery lasts years longer. It costs Rs 15,000 to 30,000.

How much clearance does a WC need?+

Eighteen inches from the centreline to any side wall and 24 inches of clear space in front. Less than that and you cannot sit comfortably or clean around it. A wall-hung WC with a concealed cistern also gains you about 8 inches of depth over a floor-mounted unit.

Where should the floor drain go?+

Inside the shower zone, with the whole floor falling to it at 1 in 80. A single trap is better than two because two competing falls produce a flat patch between them, which is where the water sits. Check the fall with water, not a level.

Can I move the WC?+

Within a sunk slab, usually by two or three feet using the sunk depth. In a non-sunk bathroom the drain runs in your neighbour's ceiling, so the realistic options are a floor-mounted P-trap, a macerator or a raised platform. All three need society consent.
