| What it delivers | Pattern, image, fine texture | Three-dimensional relief and depth |
| Installation time | Half a day per wall | 2 – 4 days including drying |
| Substrate needed | Putty, sanded, primed | Putty, sanded, system primer |
| Repair | Re-paper one drop from the same batch | Re-do the whole wall face |
| Removal | Peels off in an afternoon | Scrape and skim, ₹60 – 120 per sq ft |
| Dust accumulation | Low | High on deep relief |
| Damp behaviour | Bubbles, mould behind | Blisters in sheets |

| Life | 5 – 8 years | 7 – 10 years |
Costed on a 12 by 10 foot feature wall
| Line | Imported non-woven wallpaper | Trowelled travertine texture |
|---|---|---|
| Wall preparation, 120 sq ft | ₹4,800 | ₹4,800 |
| Material | ₹9,600 (3 rolls at ₹3,200) | included in applied rate |
| Application | ₹2,100 | ₹24,000 at ₹200 per sq ft |
| Protective sealer | — | ₹2,400 |
| Total, ex-GST | ₹16,500 | ₹31,200 |
| Cost to remove in year six | ₹2,500 | ₹10,800 |
A roller or comb texture at ₹80 per sq ft would come to about ₹14,400 and undercut the wallpaper. The gap is driven by which texture, not by the category.
Where texture is the better answer
- When you want the wall to read as a material. A trowelled travertine or polished stucco has depth that a printed surface cannot imitate under raking light.
- Behind a television or a bed, where a relief surface catches lamplight and gives the wall presence without pattern.
- Where the wall is slightly irregular. Texture absorbs minor unevenness; wallpaper reveals every ridge.
- Where you want it to last. Seven to ten years against five to eight, and no seams to lift.
- Where a seam would be intolerable. Wallpaper on a 14 ft wall has three or four vertical seams, visible at certain angles, and some clients cannot unsee them.
Where wallpaper is the better answer
- When you want pattern or an image. Texture cannot do a botanical, a geometric or a mural, and a digitally printed wallpaper can put any image on a wall for ₹90–350 per sq ft.
- When you expect to change it. Peeling wallpaper off is an afternoon; scraping texture back is a two to three day dusty job at ₹60–120 per sq ft.
- In a child’s room, where the scheme has a five-year life by definition.
- On a tight programme. Half a day per wall against three or four days for a trowelled texture including drying and sealing.
- When the budget is fixed and the wall is large. Mid-range wallpaper installed is usually cheaper per square foot than trowelled texture, though cheaper than roller texture it is not.
Damp: the rule that governs both
Mumbai external walls, and internal walls shared with a bathroom or a duct, carry moisture through the monsoon. Both finishes trap that moisture against the plaster, and both fail — wallpaper by bubbling and growing mould behind, texture by blistering off in sheets.
- Measure with a moisture meter, not by touch. Above about 12% and neither finish should be applied.
- Do not apply either to an external wall, a wall below a leaking chajja, or a wall shared with a neighbour’s bathroom, until the source is fixed and one full monsoon has passed.
- The safest walls for both are internal partitions and bedroom feature walls away from external faces.
- Where a client insists on a doubtful wall, we use a breathable non-woven paper with fungicidal adhesive and exclude damp-related failure from the warranty in writing.
- Fixing the damp first costs more and is the only thing that works. Everything else is a delay.
Verdict
| What you want | Choose | Budget for 120 sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| A pattern or an image | Wallpaper | ₹8,000 – 25,000 |
| Depth and relief that reads as a material | Trowelled texture | ₹25,000 – 45,000 |
| The cheapest presentable feature wall | Roller or comb texture | ₹10,000 – 16,000 |
| Something you will change in five years | Wallpaper | ₹8,000 – 25,000 |
| A child’s room | Wallpaper, vinyl grade | ₹8,000 – 18,000 |
| A wall that may be damp | Neither — fix it first | — |
Our usual position: one feature wall only, in whichever material suits the room, with the rest of the walls in a good washable emulsion. Two textured walls in one room is a decorating decision that ages faster than either material does.
Frequently asked questions
Which is cheaper, wallpaper or texture?+
It depends entirely on which texture. A roller or comb texture at ₹60–95 per sq ft undercuts most wallpaper installed. A trowelled travertine or polished stucco at ₹180–350 costs considerably more than mid-range imported paper. Compare the specific finishes, not the categories.
Can texture paint be removed later?+
It has to be scraped and skimmed back, which is a messy two to three day job at ₹60–120 per sq ft. Wallpaper peels off in an afternoon. If you change your interiors every few years, that difference is the strongest argument for paper.
Will either hide a cracked or uneven wall?+
Texture absorbs minor unevenness and hides hairline shrinkage cracks for a few years; wallpaper reveals every ridge and needs a properly skimmed substrate. Neither fixes a moving structural crack — it will reappear through both.
How long do they last in Mumbai?+
Wallpaper five to eight years, with edges lifting first at external corners and near switches. Texture seven to ten years, ageing mostly through dust in the relief rather than wear. Both last considerably less on a wall that is damp.
Can I use either in a kitchen or corridor?+
We advise against both. Kitchens deposit oil aerosol that neither surface releases easily; corridors take shoulder and bag contact that abrades texture and lifts paper edges. Use a washable luxury emulsion in both locations and save the feature finish for a wall that is looked at rather than touched.
