Categories and market bands
| Appliance | Band we observe | Planning requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in oven | ₹35,000 – 1,60,000 | Dedicated 16A circuit; ventilation clearance around the housing |
| Built-in microwave | ₹22,000 – 60,000 | Power point inside the housing, air gap per the manual |
| Gas hob, 4 – 5 burner | ₹18,000 – 70,000 | Cut-out size, gas point position, worktop thickness limit |
| Induction hob | ₹35,000 – 1,20,000 | High-load dedicated circuit; not a standard socket |
| Dishwasher, free-standing | ₹38,000 – 80,000 | Water inlet, drain, power, and a 600 mm gap |
| Dishwasher, fully integrated | ₹60,000 – 1,40,000 | Matching shutter fabricated by the kitchen maker |
| Built-in refrigerator | ₹1,40,000 – 4,00,000 | Housing, ventilation and floor loading |

The sequence that avoids expensive mistakes
- Decide the appliance schedule at design stage. Every built-in appliance has a specified cabinet cut-out, a housing depth and a service requirement, and these differ between models.
- Obtain the installation drawings for the exact models chosen, and hand them to the kitchen manufacturer before cutting begins.
- Coordinate the electrical layout against them. Ovens and induction hobs need dedicated high-load circuits from the distribution board, not a spur from the nearest socket.
- Coordinate the plumbing. A dishwasher needs an inlet valve, a drain connection and a power point, and the drain must be at the correct height with a standpipe or a trap connection.
- Confirm counter thickness. Some hobs limit the worktop thickness they can be fitted into, and a 40 mm mitred quartz edge can exceed it.
- Deliver appliances late. Appliances on site during civil works get damaged. Schedule delivery for the week of installation.
Dishwashers in a Mumbai kitchen
Clients ask whether a dishwasher is worth it in a household with domestic help. Our observation is that it is, and the reason is not labour — it is water temperature and hygiene, particularly for oily Indian vessels.
- Allow a 600 mm clear bay in the base run with the services behind it. Retrofitting later means cutting a carcass and running a drain through a finished kitchen.
- The drain must connect above the trap water level or through a proper standpipe. A drain hose pushed into a floor trap will siphon and smell.
- Hard water in parts of Mumbai leaves deposits. Use dishwasher salt where the machine has a softener and descale periodically.
- Large Indian vessels do not fit every machine. Check the internal height and rack configuration against a kadhai and a pressure cooker before buying.
- A fully integrated machine takes a shutter matching the rest of the kitchen, which the joinery contractor makes to the appliance manufacturer’s template. Agree who supplies that shutter in the contract.
Electrical planning for built-in appliances
- An oven, an induction hob and a large refrigerator each want their own circuit from the distribution board, with the cable sized for the load.
- Socket positions inside appliance housings must be accessible without dismantling the joinery — usually in the adjacent cabinet, not directly behind the appliance.
- Total connected load in an appliance-heavy kitchen can exceed what an older Mumbai flat’s wiring was designed for. This is checked at the distribution board, not assumed.
- Where the load requires it, the society may need to be informed of a sanctioned load increase. Do this early; it is an administrative delay, not a technical one.
- Leave the appliance manuals, model numbers and installation drawings in the handover file. Service calls in year four start with the model number.
Our position
Greenbox is an independent design and build studio. We are not a dealer, distributor, service centre or channel partner for Bosch or for any appliance manufacturer. We specify appliances on the merits of the model, buy through Mumbai dealers at market rates, and pass through supplier invoices where we procure for clients. Warranties and service are the manufacturer’s, on the manufacturer’s terms.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to choose appliances before the kitchen is made?+
Yes, for anything built in. Cut-out dimensions, housing depths and service requirements differ between models, and a carcass cut to the wrong size is scrap. Free-standing appliances can be chosen later, provided the gap and the services are correct.
Is a dishwasher practical in an Indian kitchen?+
In our experience yes, with two caveats: check that your largest vessels fit the racks, and plan the drain and water connection during the renovation. Retrofitting a dishwasher into a finished kitchen means cutting a carcass and running services through completed work.
Is Greenbox a Bosch dealer or service partner?+
No. We hold no dealership, distributorship or service arrangement with Bosch or with any appliance manufacturer. We specify on merit, buy on the open market and pass through invoices where we procure for clients.
Can a built-in oven go anywhere in the kitchen?+
It needs a housing with the manufacturer’s ventilation clearances, a dedicated circuit, and a position that is comfortable to use — usually in a tall unit at chest height rather than under the counter. It should not sit next to a refrigerator without proper separation.
What is the most common appliance mistake you see?+
Appliances bought after the joinery was made. The second most common is an inadequate electrical provision — an oven and induction hob run off circuits that were never sized for them, which trips the board and, in older flats, is a genuine safety issue.
