Where a small study actually goes
| Location | Usable size | What it needs | Honest verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| End of a passage | 1,200 × 1,600 mm | A socket and a light point | Best option in most 2BHKs |
| Converted utility balcony | 1,500 × 1,200 mm | Glazing, waterproofing, a circuit | Excellent, if it is legally enclosable |
| Bay in the master bedroom | 1,500 × 1,500 mm | Separate switching, a screen | Works until two people work from home |
| Inside a wardrobe run | 900 × 600 mm | Bi-fold shutters, a fixed light | Fine for a laptop, not for two screens |
| Living room corner | 1,200 × 1,600 mm | A background wall, acoustic care | Calls become a household negotiation |
Enclosing a balcony changes the flat's approved plan. Check the society's position and the building's fit-out rules before spending anything on it.
Palette for a nook inside another room
A study nook sits inside a larger room, so it should either match that room exactly or contrast deliberately on one plane. The half-measure — a slightly different beige — is what makes it read as an afterthought.
- Chalk
#F3F1EC— the surrounding wall, continuing from the host room - Deep petrol
#37474A— the nook's back wall only, framing the desk - Oak
#B98B57— desk top and the open shelf - Sage
#9AA39C— the pinboard fabric - Ink
#202223— task light, monitor arm, shelf brackets
Details that make a nook usable
- A wall-fixed 1,200–1,500 mm desk at 550 mm depth on concealed brackets, with no legs, so the chair and your feet have the whole space.
- A monitor arm, not a stand. On a 550 mm desk a monitor stand puts the screen 400 mm from your eyes; an arm pushes it back to 650 mm and returns the desk surface.
- 300 mm deep shelving above the desk starting at 1,150 mm, so it clears the screen and does not loom over the working surface.
- A 400 mm deep slim storage column beside the desk to full height, for files, the printer and the cable brick. Depth beyond 400 mm makes the nook feel like a corridor.
Costing a small study nook
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Desk | 1,500 mm wall-fixed top at 550 mm depth, concealed brackets, grommet | ₹38,000 |
| Shelving | Two 300 mm shelves above the desk plus an under-desk drawer unit | ₹34,000 |
| Storage column | 400 mm deep, full height, files and printer bay, shutters | ₹42,000 |
| Power and light | Two twin sockets at desk level, data point, task light | ₹14,000 |
| Acoustic pinboard | 900 × 600 mm fabric-wrapped board behind the screen | ₹12,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹1,40,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. The chair is not included and should not be cut. A ₹18,000–₹35,000 task chair is the difference between a nook you use and a nook you avoid.
Three ways a study nook fails
- Not enough room behind the chair. At 700 mm you cannot stand up without pushing the chair sideways, and within a month the nook stops being used. 1,000 mm, minimum.
- A 450 mm deep desk. It looks efficient on a plan and it puts a screen too close to your eyes. 550 mm with an arm is the smallest that works.
- Sharing a socket with the room. A workstation on an extension lead off the bedroom's lighting circuit is both unreliable and unsafe. Run a dedicated point at desk height.
Finding the nook in a Mumbai flat
The best candidate in most Mumbai 2BHKs is the dead end of the passage between the bedrooms, which is typically 1,100–1,300 mm wide and does nothing. A 550 mm desk across it leaves 600 mm of walkway, which is enough where the passage serves two rooms and not enough where it serves three. The second candidate is the utility balcony, and here the caution is legal rather than dimensional: enclosing a balcony alters the approved plan, and many societies and the BMC treat it as a deviation. Check before you glaze. If the nook is in a bedroom, put it on the wall furthest from the bed and give it its own switch, because the person working at 11pm and the person sleeping are usually the same household.

Frequently asked questions
How small can a home desk be?+
1,200 mm wide by 550 mm deep is the practical minimum for a laptop, a monitor on an arm and a notebook. Below 1,000 mm wide there is nowhere to put anything down, and the desk becomes a laptop stand.
Can I put a study in a wardrobe?+
A 900 mm bay with bi-fold shutters, a fixed light and a socket works for a laptop and closes away at the end of the day. It does not work for two screens, and it does not solve the chair clearance, which still needs 1,000 mm in the room outside.
Is converting a balcony into a study allowed?+
It depends on the society and the building's sanctioned plan; enclosing a balcony is often treated as a deviation. Ask the society in writing before spending, and expect the answer to differ between a 1970s building and a 2015 tower.
How do I separate a nook from the room it is in?+
A fluted glass partition, a curtain on a ceiling track, or simply a different wall colour and its own light. A partition costs ₹1,100–₹2,400 per sq ft; a curtain costs a tenth of that and works nearly as well for concentration, though not for sound.
