Scandinavian foyer design ideas

A bench to sit on, hooks for what you are carrying, a mirror and a mat. The Nordic entrance is four things, and three of them are the things an Indian entrance actually needs.

Four pieces, in order of usefulness

  • The bench. 1,200 mm long, 350 mm deep, 450 mm high, in ash or oak, with open ventilated shoe storage beneath and a seat pad on top. Sitting to remove shoes is the function every Indian entrance needs and most do not provide.
  • The hook rail. Five or six matte black hooks on a backing board at 1,650 mm, for bags, umbrellas and the jacket you only wear on flights. ₹2,000, and it stops all of that landing on a chair in the living room.
  • The mirror. Round, 600–800 mm, on the return wall rather than facing the door. Checked on the way out, and it bounces what little light the entrance gets.
  • The mat. A recessed coir mat if the flooring is being done, a good loose one if not. In Mumbai this is a functional item for four months of the year.

The Scandinavian entrance palette

Pale and simple, with the wood as the only warmth. Entrances in Mumbai flats have no daylight, so keep the tones light and put a warm lamp rather than a cool downlight in the space.

  • Warm white #F8F5EF — the walls
  • Pale ash #DFD1BA — the bench and the hook rail board
  • Soft sage #B8C3BC — one painted return, if any colour at all
  • Greige #9A8C7B — the seat pad and the mat
  • Matte black #25272A — the hooks, the mirror frame and the light

What to make and what to buy

  • An ash or oak veneered bench on a stable core, made locally for ₹45,000–₹70,000 with ventilated shoe storage beneath. Solid pale timber moves in Mumbai humidity.
  • Open shoe storage under the bench, not enclosed. It holds about 10–12 pairs and it ventilates itself, which solves the problem a closed cabinet creates.
  • Matte black hooks in powder-coated aluminium or stainless, not painted MS. Hooks take weight and get knocked, and painted steel chips and rusts at the chip.
  • One warm 2700K wall light on its own switch, rather than a ceiling downlight. It is the light you use at 11pm without waking the flat.

What a Scandinavian entrance costs

22 sq ft entrance zone, Scandinavian specification, Mumbai 2026, ex-GST
ElementSpecification2026 Mumbai cost
Bench1,200 mm ash bench with ventilated open shoe storage and a seat pad₹62,000
Hook rail and shelfBacking board with six matte black hooks plus a 200 mm drop shelf₹14,000
Mirror700 mm round mirror in a matte black frame, on the return wall₹12,000
LightingOne warm 2700K wall light on its own switch, plus a socket₹12,000
Mat and paintCoir mat and paint to the entrance zone₹12,000

Total at this specification: ₹1,12,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. This holds 10–12 pairs of shoes. A family with thirty pairs needs the tall unit on one of the other pages; this scheme is honest about its capacity.

Three limits to be honest about

  1. Shoe capacity. Open storage under a 1,200 mm bench holds 10–12 pairs. If the household owns thirty, this scheme does not work and a full-height unit is the answer.
  2. Open storage in a dusty location. On a lower floor near a main road, open shoe storage collects grit. A ventilated closed unit is better there, at the cost of the style's simplicity.
  3. A mirror facing the door. Practically it reflects the lift lobby into the flat, and many families avoid it on vaastu grounds. Put it on the return wall.

A simple entrance in a Mumbai flat

This is the scheme for a rented flat or a small budget, because the bench is the only built item and even that can be freestanding. Two local considerations. Shoe capacity is the real limit: Indian households keep more footwear than Nordic ones and more of it comes inside, because most Mumbai societies now discourage shoes outside the door. Count before committing. Second, the door swing — the 900 mm arc behind an inward-opening flat door is unusable, so measure it before deciding which wall the bench goes on. If the meter box or intercom is on that wall, keep the bench clear of it rather than building around it, which this scheme has no way to do neatly.

Frequently asked questions

How many shoes does a bench hold?+

About 10–12 pairs in open storage under a 1,200 mm bench. For a household with thirty pairs, this is not enough and a full-height tilt-out unit is the right answer.

Is open shoe storage a good idea?+

It ventilates itself, which closed storage does not, and it is honest about what is there. The downside is dust and visible clutter, which on a lower floor near a road is a real consideration.

Where should the hooks go?+

1,650 mm from the floor on a backing board, five or six of them. Lower and coats drag on the bench; higher and children cannot reach. The backing board matters if the wall is a hollow partition.

Can this work without any built joinery?+

Yes — a freestanding bench, a hook rail on a backing board and a hung mirror. Three plugged holes when you leave. It is the entrance scheme we suggest most often for rented flats.
