What is a track light?

A powered rail you can move fittings along — the answer when the art is not on the wall yet.

The problem it solves

Recessed downlights are a decision you make before the ceiling closes and live with for a decade. Track defers the decision. Add a painting, move a console, convert a study into a nursery — you slide the head and re-aim it in a minute. In rented flats and in homes where the art collection is still growing, that flexibility is worth more than the slightly industrial look.

It is also the honest solution where there is no ceiling void. A slab you cannot cut into, a heritage-precinct flat in south Mumbai with a beautiful high ceiling, a loft conversion — track surface-mounts or suspends on droppers and needs one feed.

Systems and what they cost

Mumbai 2026, ex-GST
SystemTrack rateHead rateWhere it fits
Single-circuit surface, 2-wire₹450–700 / m₹900–1,800Homes, small galleries
Three-circuit, 4-wire₹900–1,200 / m₹1,600–4,500Retail, separately switched scenes
Magnetic low-voltage, recessed₹2,400–5,000 / m₹1,400–3,800Premium residential ceilings
Suspended track on droppers₹1,100–1,800 / m₹1,600–4,500High slabs, double-height rooms

Magnetic systems look best but lock you into one manufacturer's heads — check availability of spares before committing a whole flat.

Getting it right in a home

  • Run the track parallel to the wall you intend to light, 600–900 mm off it, not down the middle of the room.
  • Three heads per 2 m of track is usually plenty; six looks like a shop.
  • Use 15–24° beams for pictures and 36° for general fill on the same run.
  • On a three-circuit track, put accent heads and fill heads on separate circuits so you can run one alone.
  • Match colour temperature across every head — mixed batches on one rail are unmissable.

Track versus downlight versus spot

A downlight is fixed and invisible; a track is visible and movable; a surface spot is visible and fixed. Cost per lit point is close once you include the rail, so the choice is about flexibility and how much hardware you want to see. Many Mumbai flats we finish use recessed downlights for the general layer and a single short track above a gallery wall. Related: profile lighting. The layered lighting guide puts the three together, and residential interior design covers the full scheme.

Frequently asked questions

Is track lighting outdated?+

The 1990s halogen bar is. Current magnetic and slim three-circuit systems are the standard specification in retail and in a lot of premium residential work, precisely because a fixed grid of downlights cannot follow a changing room.

How many heads can one track take?+

Electrically, the limit is the circuit — a 6 A circuit comfortably runs 15 or more 10 W LED heads. Visually, three to five per 2 m is the useful range. The constraint is nearly always the look, not the load.

Can I add track to an existing ceiling point?+

Usually yes. A single-circuit track can be fed from an existing ceiling rose provided the fixing goes into the slab and not just into gypsum board. Budget ₹1,800–3,000 for making good and a proper anchor.

Does track lighting work in a bedroom?+

It can, on a dimmer and with deep-baffle heads aimed at walls rather than at the bed. Aimed carelessly, a track puts a spot in the eye of anyone lying down, which is why we usually keep it to living, dining and study spaces.
