Porcelain versus vitrified, honestly
In India the two words are used loosely, and most of what is sold as premium glazed vitrified is, technically, porcelain. The meaningful distinctions are body refinement, edge rectification and format. A true porcelain slab has a fine white body — so a chip is far less visible — and is cut to rectified dimensions, allowing 1.5–2 mm joints. Compared with a standard vitrified tile, you are paying for precision and size, not for a different chemistry.
| Format | Rate / sq ft | Laying rate | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 600 × 600 mm | ₹110–180 | ₹45–70 | Bedrooms, general floors |
| 800 × 1600 mm | ₹160–280 | ₹85–130 | Living rooms, large spans |
| 1200 × 2400 mm slab | ₹280–450 | ₹140–220 | Feature walls, minimal joints |
| 1600 × 3200 mm, 6 mm slab | ₹380–650 | ₹180–300 | Countertops, cladding, lift lobbies |
| Anti-skid outdoor, 20 mm | ₹260–420 | ₹90–150 | Terraces, podium decks |
Where large format earns its cost
- A living room floor with four joints instead of forty reads as one continuous surface.
- A slab backsplash matching the countertop removes the grout line behind the hob entirely — the hardest surface in a kitchen to keep clean.
- Bathroom walls in 1200 × 2400 mm mean one joint, floor to ceiling.
- Sintered porcelain countertops tolerate heat, unlike quartz.
What it demands in return
Substrate flatness within 2 mm over 2 m, full adhesive coverage with back-buttering, a C2TE-class adhesive, and a crew who have handled slabs before — a 1200 × 2400 mm panel needs suction frames and four people. Cutting is done wet with a rail and a scoring wheel or a waterjet for cut-outs. Site breakage on large-format work runs 3–6% and should be in the quotation, not a surprise.
For a Mumbai flat, the combination that works is large-format porcelain in the living areas and standard vitrified in bedrooms, which keeps the visual impact where visitors stand. See flooring for Mumbai homes and luxury interior design.
Frequently asked questions
Is porcelain better than vitrified tile?+
It is the dense, refined end of the same family. The practical gains are a finer body, rectified edges and much larger formats. For a standard 600 × 600 mm bedroom floor, a good double-charged vitrified tile is the better value.
Can porcelain slabs be used as a kitchen countertop?+
Yes — sintered porcelain counters are heatproof and UV-stable, unlike quartz. The weakness is an unsupported edge, so cut-outs need radiused corners and full support beneath. Expect ₹900–2,200 per sq ft installed.
Do large-format tiles need special adhesive?+
Yes, a C2TE polymer-modified adhesive applied with a notched trowel and back-buttered onto the tile. Traditional cement mortar beds do not give the coverage a large panel needs, and hollow spots become cracks.
How much wastage should I allow on porcelain?+
8–10% on standard formats and 12–15% on large slabs where cuts around a kitchen or a bathroom are unavoidable. Order the full quantity in one batch — shade variation between production runs is visible on a large floor.
