Thin HPL and compact HPL
They are the same technology at different thicknesses. Thin HPL is what most people simply call laminate — a decorative sheet bonded to a board. Compact HPL is built up to 6, 8, 10 or 12 mm and needs no substrate at all: it is the material toilet cubicles, locker doors, lab benches and ventilated facade panels are made from. Compact grade is dimensionally stable, waterproof through its thickness and has a characteristic black or brown core at the edge.
| Grade | Thickness | Rate per sq ft | Typical application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard interior HPL | 0.8–1 mm | ₹35–80 | Shutters, worktops, panelling |
| Compact interior grade | 6 mm | ₹210–320 | Toilet cubicles, lockers |
| Compact interior grade | 12 mm | ₹380–560 | Cubicle doors, bench tops |
| Exterior grade (EGP) | 6–8 mm | ₹260–420 | Balcony and facade cladding |
| Fire-retardant compact | 6–12 mm | ₹420–700 | Office lobbies, escape corridors |
Where it earns its place in Indian projects
- Office and retail fit-outs where a surface has to survive a thousand people a day.
- Washrooms: compact HPL cubicles outlast ply-and-laminate versions in Mumbai humidity by years.
- Balcony and duct-facing joinery, where exterior-grade HPL tolerates driven monsoon rain.
- Building signage, lift lobby cladding and any surface that must be cleaned aggressively.
HPL versus melamine-faced board
Melamine facing is fused to a board at low pressure and is roughly a tenth of a millimetre thick. HPL is pressed separately at high pressure and bonded on, at eight to ten times that thickness. The difference shows in abrasion, impact and edge chipping, which is why melamine board goes inside a cabinet and HPL goes on the outside. In a commercial specification the distinction is not cosmetic — it decides whether the surface survives its warranty period.
For an office project, HPL usually appears on storage fronts, reception cladding and washroom cubicles at once. See commercial interiors and office fit-out for how it is specified and phased.
Frequently asked questions
Is HPL the same as laminate?+
Thin HPL is what the Indian trade calls laminate. The term HPL matters when you move to compact grades, which are self-supporting sheets rather than facings — a different product used for cubicles, lockers and cladding.
Is compact HPL waterproof?+
Through its thickness, yes. That is why it is the standard for toilet cubicles: a compact panel can be hosed down and has no core to swell. Exterior grade adds UV stability for balcony and facade use.
Can HPL be used for a kitchen countertop?+
Post-formed HPL worktops exist and are common in budget kitchens at ₹450–800 per running foot. They tolerate water but not heat or knives, and the join at a sink cut-out is the weak point. Quartz or granite remains the better choice.
How thick should HPL cladding be?+
6 mm for internal wall cladding on a frame at 600 mm centres, 8 mm for exterior or high-traffic areas, and 12 mm for cubicle doors that take daily impact. Thinner panels on wide spacings will visibly bow.
