What is epoxy grout?

Resin instead of cement in the joints — stain-proof, mould-proof and about eight times the price.

What the premium actually buys

0%water absorption
₹22–48per sq ft added over cement
5–8 yrstypical cement grout life in a shower
15+ yrsepoxy grout in the same position

On a standard Mumbai bathroom of roughly 220 sq ft of tiled surface, moving from cement to epoxy adds ₹5,000–10,000. Re-grouting that same bathroom in five years costs ₹20,000–40,000 and takes three days with the room out of use. The arithmetic is not close.

Where we specify it as standard

  • Shower enclosures and the whole wet side of a bathroom.
  • Kitchen backsplashes and counter junctions, where oil and turmeric would permanently stain cement.
  • Balconies and terraces exposed to monsoon rain.
  • Swimming pools, clubhouse wet areas and commercial washrooms.
  • Any floor where a cleaner will use acid-based products.

Working with it — the honest part

Epoxy grout is unforgiving. It has a pot life of 45–60 minutes, it must be washed off the tile face immediately with the correct pads, and once it cures on a textured or matte tile it cannot be removed without damaging the surface. A crew that has not used it before will leave a haze across the whole floor. Ask specifically whether the tiler has done epoxy work, and insist on a sample area first on any textured tile.

Colour range is narrower than cement grout and the metallic and translucent options cost more again. Whatever colour is chosen, the internal corners and the tile-to-counter junction take a matching silicone rather than grout, because those junctions move and a rigid filler will crack along them.

Epoxy versus polymer-modified cement

Polymer-modified cement grout at ₹60–140 per kg is the middle option: better colour retention and lower porosity than plain cement, far easier to apply than epoxy, and still porous enough to stain in a shower. Our practice is polymer grout on dry floors and epoxy in every wet area — the extra ₹6,000 on a flat is the least controversial money in the whole budget. Frequently asked questions

Is epoxy grout worth the extra cost?+

In wet areas, clearly. It adds ₹5,000–10,000 to a bathroom and removes the re-grouting cycle entirely. On a dry bedroom floor the case is much weaker, and a polymer-modified cement grout is the sensible choice there.

Can epoxy grout be used over existing cement grout?+

Only after the old grout is raked out to at least two-thirds of the tile depth. Applying epoxy over cement gives a thin film that will fail at the edges. Raking out is the bulk of the labour cost in a re-grout.

Does epoxy grout crack?+

It is more flexible than cement and rarely cracks itself. Movement cracks appear where a joint should have been a movement joint — at internal corners and at floor-to-wall junctions, which should be silicone, not grout.

Is epoxy grout safe for kitchen surfaces?+

Once cured, yes — it is chemically inert and is the standard in commercial kitchens precisely because it can be cleaned aggressively. Ventilation matters during application, which is a two-hour issue, not an ongoing one.
