What is cove lighting?

Indirect light bounced off the ceiling from a hidden channel — the detail that makes a low flat feel taller.

What it is for

Cove light is ambient light with no visible source. Because the beam hits the slab and scatters, there are no hot spots, no glare and no shadow lines on faces — which is why it reads as calm and slightly expensive. In a Mumbai flat with a 2.8 m slab, a perimeter cove also buys height: the eye reads the lit band as the edge of the room, and the ceiling appears to float.

It is the wrong tool for task light. Nobody chops onions or reads a contract under a cove. Treat it as layer one of three, with downlights for general light and profile or spots for accent.

Getting the detail right

  • Pocket depth 100–150 mm. Shallower and you see the strip reflected as a bright line; deeper and the light never escapes.
  • Strip set back 50–75 mm from the lip, mounted on the horizontal face, not the vertical.
  • Slab must be smooth. Grazing light finds every trowel mark — putty and paint the slab inside the cove as carefully as the visible ceiling.
  • Driver access. One access panel per driver, or the first failure means cutting the ceiling open.
  • Continuous run. Butt-joined strips leave dark gaps at corners; specify corner connectors.

Cove versus profile

A cove hides the strip in a plaster recess and lights the ceiling. A profile light sets the strip in an aluminium extrusion with a diffuser and shows a deliberate lit line — in the ceiling, in a shutter reveal, under a shelf. Cove is architectural and soft; profile is graphic and precise. Profile costs roughly twice as much per running foot and needs far better setting-out, because the line is visible and therefore must be straight.

Plan both at the drawing stage, not after the ceiling is up. Our layered lighting guide shows the three layers together, and the ceiling design service covers the joinery of the pocket.

Frequently asked questions

Is cove lighting enough on its own?+

No. A cove gives roughly 30–60 lux at floor level in a typical bedroom — atmospheric, not functional. Pair it with downlights or a pendant for the 150–300 lux a living space actually needs.

Which colour temperature suits cove lighting?+

2700K–3000K in homes. Because the light bounces off a painted slab, the ceiling colour shifts it — a warm white strip under an off-white ceiling reads warmer still. Keep every strip in a room from one batch or the corners will not match.

How long does an LED strip in a cove last?+

A good strip is rated 30,000–50,000 hours, but heat kills it faster than time. A strip stuck to plaster with no aluminium backing runs hot and fades unevenly within three years. Mount on an aluminium channel even inside a cove.

Can cove lighting be dimmed?+

Yes, with a dimmable driver — specify it up front, because a standard constant-voltage driver will flicker or simply refuse. Budget ₹2,200–4,500 for a dimmable driver and keep the dimmer on the same circuit family.
