Scope and positioning
| Aspect | Blum | Hettich |
|---|---|---|
| Range scope | Hinges, runners, drawer systems, lift systems | Full furniture and kitchen fittings range |
| Price positioning | Premium | Value through premium |
| Tier choice within the brand | Narrow | Wide |
| Typical hinge band we observe | ₹380 – 900 per piece | ₹90 – 420 per piece |
| Typical drawer system band | ₹4,500 – 12,000 per drawer | ₹2,200 – 6,500 per drawer |
| Lift systems | Yes | Yes |
| Wardrobe sliding gear | Limited | Yes |
| Storage accessories and pull-outs | Limited | Yes |

Bands are what we pay through Mumbai dealers, not official price lists. They overlap at the top of one range and the bottom of the other.
Where premium motion hardware is defensible
- Kitchen base drawers. A pan drawer in a family kitchen is opened roughly five thousand times a year carrying real weight. Mechanism quality is felt daily and failure is most annoying here.
- Wall unit lift systems. A poorly specified gas stay drops a heavy shutter on someone. This is a safety-adjacent item, not a comfort one.
- Handle-less fronts. Push-to-open and motorised opening must work reliably or the entire design language fails at the first push.
- Deep pan drawers with heavy loads. Load rating and lateral stability at full extension are where premium systems visibly differ.
- A kitchen you intend to keep fifteen years. Over that horizon the difference in cycle life is the thing you are buying.
Where a mid-tier fitting is indistinguishable
- Wardrobe internal drawers. Opened a few hundred times a year without load. Nobody has ever identified the brand of a wardrobe runner by feel.
- Loft and utility shutters. Opened a handful of times a year.
- Cabinet doors generally. A good soft-close hinge from any established manufacturer is a solved problem at mid tier.
- Study and bedroom furniture. Low cycle, low load.
- Guest bedrooms and second homes, where the cycle count is a fraction of a permanent residence.
The mixed schedule, costed
| Location | Tier | Approximate cost |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen base drawers, 6 nos | Premium drawer systems | ₹38,000 – 62,000 |
| Kitchen wall unit lift systems, 2 nos | Premium | ₹12,000 – 22,000 |
| All cabinet doors, 34 hinges | Mid tier | ₹7,500 – 12,000 |
| Kitchen accessories and pull-outs | Mid tier | ₹28,000 – 55,000 |
| Wardrobe shutters and internals | Value tier | ₹14,000 – 26,000 |
| Utility, loft, study | Value tier | ₹6,000 – 12,000 |
| Total hardware, 2BHK | — | ₹1,05,500 – 1,89,000 |
Specifying premium throughout the same flat typically adds ₹45,000–90,000 for no perceptible benefit in the low-cycle locations.
Practical notes for either choice
- Record the hardware schedule in the handover file — brand, tier and quantity per cabinet. Without it, ordering a matching spare in year six is guesswork.
- Mixing brands across a flat is normal professional practice and invisible in use. What causes problems is an undocumented mix.
- Ask for two spare hinges and one runner pair to be handed over at completion, whatever brands are used.
- Check what arrived. Hardware is the easiest line in a project to substitute after sample approval; retain the packaging until handover.
- Near the sea, exposed metal fittings in a bathroom or balcony cabinet corrode regardless of brand. Specify stainless for exposed hardware and keep plated steel internal.
What a premium drawer system actually gives you
It is worth being specific about what the money buys, because “better quality” is not an argument anyone can act on.
- Lateral stability at full extension. A loaded drawer pulled fully out should not rock side to side. This is the single most noticeable difference between tiers in daily use.
- Consistent damping under load. A cheap damper closes an empty drawer beautifully and slams a full one. A good one behaves the same either way.
- Load rating that is real. A 40 kg rated system carrying 40 kg of pressure cookers should still run smoothly in year eight.
- Adjustability. Height, tilt and side adjustment on the drawer front, so a run of six drawers lines up perfectly and can be re-aligned later.
- Replaceable parts. Dampers and runners as spares rather than a whole-drawer rebuild. Over fifteen years this is often what the premium is really buying.
Verdict
| Component | Our specification |
|---|---|
| Kitchen base drawers | Premium drawer system |
| Kitchen wall unit lifts | Premium, sized to shutter weight |
| All cabinet hinges | Mid tier, three per tall shutter |
| Kitchen pull-outs and accessories | Mid tier |
| Wardrobe internals | Value tier |
| Sliding wardrobe gear | Mid tier, rated to shutter weight |
| Loft and utility | Value tier |
The verdict is not a brand; it is an allocation. Put the premium mechanism where hands and weight go every day, and a competent mid-tier fitting everywhere else. Anyone insisting on one brand throughout is either simplifying or selling.
Frequently asked questions
Is Blum worth the extra over Hettich?+
On kitchen base drawers and lift systems in a home you will keep a decade, most clients think so. On wardrobe internals and low-use cabinets, no — the difference is not perceptible. The efficient answer is a mixed schedule rather than one brand throughout.
Can I mix the two in one kitchen?+
Yes, and we do it routinely. Different cabinets having different hinges is invisible to the user. What matters is that each cabinet has the right fitting for its load and cycle count, and that the schedule is recorded for future spares.
Is Greenbox a dealer for either?+
No. We hold no dealership, distributorship or channel relationship with Blum, Hettich or any other manufacturer. We specify on merit, buy through Mumbai dealers on the open market and pass through invoices where we procure.
Which has better spares availability in India?+
Both have established distribution in Indian cities and, in our experience, current-range spares are obtainable through Mumbai dealers. For any specific discontinued item availability varies, which is why we ask for spare hinges and a runner pair at handover regardless of brand.
How long should a premium drawer system last?+
Twelve to fifteen years of daily use in a Mumbai kitchen without attention. Dampers soften first and are replaceable parts on established brands. That replaceability, rather than raw cycle life, is usually what justifies the premium.
