TV Size & Viewing Distance Calculator

The right TV size is a function of how far away you sit, not how big the wall is. Here is the arithmetic, before the showroom talks you into 85 inches.

How this calculator works

  1. Distance is converted to inches and divided by a combined factor — resolution factor × preference factor — to give the ideal diagonal.
  2. Resolution factors: 4K = 1.0, 1080p = 1.6, 8K = 0.8. A 4K panel can be viewed from roughly 1.6× closer than a 1080p panel of the same size before pixels become visible.
  3. Preference factors: cinematic 1.2 (about 40° of view), balanced 1.6 (about 30°), relaxed 2.0 (about 24°).
  4. The result is snapped to the nearest standard panel size from 32, 40, 43, 50, 55, 65, 75, 85 and 98 inches.
  5. Screen width = diagonal × 0.87157 and height = diagonal × 0.49027, from the 16:9 aspect ratio.
  6. Viewing angle = 2 × arctan((width ÷ 2) ÷ distance), reported in degrees so you can sanity-check the recommendation against the 30–40° band.

Sizes are snapped to the nearest available panel. Indian living rooms most often sit at 8–10 ft, which is exactly why 55 and 65 inch panels dominate the market here.

The mounting height mistake

Almost every TV we are asked to re-hang is too high. It happens because the media unit is designed first, the TV is centred on the panelling above it, and nobody checks where that puts the screen relative to a seated viewer. The correct rule is simple: the centre of the screen sits at seated eye level, which is about 42 inches from the floor on a standard sofa and 38 inches on a low lounge chair. For a 65-inch panel that puts the bottom edge at roughly 26 inches.

That is lower than most people expect, and it looks wrong in an empty room. It stops looking wrong the moment somebody sits down. If the TV must go above a console, keep the console under 24 inches high, and if it must go above a fireplace or a tall unit, accept that it is a design decision being made against comfort — and use a tilting bracket to claw back part of the difference.

The second consideration is the wall itself. A 65-inch screen needs a wall stud or a properly anchored backing board; a gypsum partition alone will not hold it. On a brick wall use chemical anchors, not plastic plugs. And run the power and HDMI inside a conduit behind the panel before the veneer goes on, because chasing it afterwards means opening a finished wall.

One more consideration specific to Indian living rooms: the TV is rarely watched from one position. There is the sofa, there is the dining table, and there is somebody standing in the kitchen doorway. Size for the sofa, because that is where the hours are spent, but check that the screen is visible from the dining table without a severe off-axis angle. Beyond about 40 degrees off centre, most LCD panels lose contrast noticeably, while OLED does not — which is a real argument for OLED in an open-plan living-dining and a weak one in a closed room.

Every constant on this page comes from Greenbox site records — measured drawings, signed BOQs and completion certificates from projects delivered between 2023 and 2026 — rounded to the figures an estimator would actually write down. We publish them so the arithmetic can be audited rather than trusted. Treat the output as a planning figure: accurate enough to brief a landlord, a bank or a family, and not accurate enough to sign a contract against.

What this tool does not cover

  • The TV, soundbar, media unit and wall panelling themselves — this tool sizes, it does not price.
  • Room lighting and reflections. A screen facing a west-facing Mumbai window will be unwatchable at 5 pm regardless of size.
  • Ultra-wide and 21:9 panels, and projectors, which follow different geometry — see the home theatre room calculator.
  • Sound. A large panel usually needs a soundbar or a 5.1 setup, and that needs power and cabling planned at the same time.
  • Multiple seating rows, where the front row governs the comfortable maximum size.
  • For the joinery around the screen, see the furniture arrangement planner.

Frequently asked questions

What size TV for a 9 foot viewing distance?+

A 65-inch 4K panel for balanced viewing. The ideal diagonal works out at 67.5 inches and 65 is the nearest standard size. If you mainly watch films and want the screen to fill your field of view, 75 inches is defensible at that distance.

How far should I sit from a 55 inch TV?+

Seven to nine feet for 4K at balanced viewing. Closer than about 6 ft and a 55-inch panel starts to fill too much of your field of view for ordinary television; further than 10 ft and it feels small.

What height should a TV be mounted at?+

Screen centre at seated eye level — 42 inches from the floor for a standard sofa. For a 65-inch panel that puts the bottom edge at about 26 inches. It looks low in an empty room and correct the moment somebody sits down.

Does 4K let me buy a bigger TV?+

Yes. A 4K panel has four times the pixels of 1080p, so you can sit roughly 1.6 times closer before individual pixels become visible. At the same seating distance that translates into a screen about 60% larger.

Is 85 inches too big for a Mumbai living room?+

At 9 ft it is only right if you want a cinematic 40-degree field of view. At 12 ft it is comfortable. The bigger practical constraint is wall width — an 85-inch panel is 74 inches wide and needs about 8 ft of clear wall to look intentional rather than crammed.
