How this calculator works

  1. Cabinetry = running feet × finish rate × layout factor. The finish rate covers BWP carcass, shutters, soft-close hinges and channels, and standard internal fittings for both base and wall units on the same running foot.
  2. Countertop = running feet × countertop rate. Rates assume a 600 mm deep slab with a 100 mm skirting and one cut-out.
  3. Scope items are flat sums, because they do not scale linearly with cabinetry length. Breaking a platform in a 10-foot kitchen and a 16-foot kitchen costs almost the same in labour and carting.
  4. Range = −8% to +10% around the total, reflecting how much brand and site condition move the real number.
  5. GST at 18% is shown separately, then added in the all-in line.
Cabinetry rates used by this calculator — base and wall units, BWP carcass, soft-close hardware
Shutter finishRate per running footLife in a Mumbai kitchenHonest verdict
Laminate (0.8 mm)₹9,9008–10 yearsThe sensible default. Edge banding is what fails, not the laminate.
Membrane / PVC foil₹11,2505–7 yearsAvoid above the hob — heat lifts the film at the edges.
Acrylic gloss₹14,35012–15 yearsBest value in the premium band. Shows fingerprints; wipes clean.
Veneer + PU₹16,40012–15 yearsBeautiful, and a maintenance commitment. Not near a wet sink run.
PU matt (7 coat)₹18,10010–14 yearsRepairable on site, which acrylic is not. Worth the premium if you cook heavily.

Straight-run rates, before the layout factor. They span the ₹9,900 to ₹18,100 per running foot our completed kitchens have actually been billed at; a U-shape or an island lifts the top of that to around ₹25,000.

Countertop rates — 600 mm deep with one cut-out
CountertopRate per running footNotes
Granite₹1,600Sealed annually; the pragmatic Indian choice
Italian marble₹2,900Stains from turmeric and lemon within a year — we advise against it
Engineered quartz₹3,400Non-porous, no sealing, handles hard water; our usual recommendation
Corian / solid surface₹4,200Seamless joints and integrated sink; scratches, but buffs out

Design and build under one accountable roof

The three decisions that actually move the number

  1. Are you moving water?

A sink shift under three feet is a ₹22,000 job — extend the supply, re-slope the waste. Beyond three feet, or to a different wall, you are cutting a new drain line into the floor, repairing waterproofing and re-laying tiles: ₹55,000 and upwards, plus a week of programme. In a Mumbai flat over an occupied unit, this also means a society NOC and a leak test before tiling.

  2. Are you breaking the platform?

Keeping the existing masonry platform saves ₹22,000 of demolition and two days. It also locks your counter height at whatever the builder chose — usually 850 mm, which is low for anyone over 5'8". If the height is wrong for the person who cooks, break it. It is the cheapest ergonomic fix you will ever buy.

  3. Are you re-tiling?

A dado replacement is ₹32,000 and is almost always worth doing at the same time, because matching a fifteen-year-old tile is impossible and a half-replaced dado looks like exactly what it is. Adding the floor takes it to ₹74,000 and adds four days for curing before cabinets can land.

Worked example: a 12-foot L-shaped Andheri kitchen

Acrylic shutters, quartz counter, old modular stripped out, sink shifted 2 ft, new dado, added points, chimney and hob:

Worked example — the figures the calculator produces at these settings
LineAmount
Cabinetry — 12 rft × ₹14,350 × 1.12₹1,92,864
Countertop — 12 rft × ₹3,400₹40,800
Strip-out and carting₹16,000
Minor plumbing shift₹22,000
Dado tiling₹32,000
Added electrical points₹18,000
Chimney and hob₹46,000
Sub-total ex-GST₹3,67,664
GST @18%₹66,180
All-in₹4,33,844

The cabinetry rates are what Greenbox has invoiced per running foot of counter on finished kitchens, re-audited at October 2026 — ₹9,900 on the plainest laminate job we have records for, ₹18,100 on a densely fitted premium one. Countertop, tile, appliance and chimney figures are supply allowances at current market prices rather than our rates. Treat the output as a planning figure: accurate enough to brief a landlord, a bank or a spouse, and not accurate enough to sign a contract against.

What this tool does not cover

  • Loose appliances — fridge, microwave, water purifier — and their circuits beyond the points allowance.
  • Window replacement, grille work and exhaust core-cutting through an external wall.
  • Society deposits, NOC charges and service-lift booking fees, which in Mumbai run ₹10,000–₹50,000 refundable.
  • False ceiling in the kitchen, and any ducting concealment beyond a standard chimney run.
  • Structural work — removing a wall between kitchen and living needs an RCC consultant's letter and, in most societies, a formal approval.
  • Discovery risk. Old flats hide corroded GI pipes and failed waterproofing behind the platform. We carry 5% as a site contingency and so should you.
  • For a new kitchen in a bare flat rather than a renovation, use the modular kitchen cost calculator; for a whole-flat refurbishment, the renovation cost calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to renovate a kitchen in Mumbai?+

₹2.5–3.1 lakh for a 10–12 running-foot kitchen with laminate or membrane shutters and a granite top, and ₹3.1–4.5 lakh for acrylic or PU with quartz, including demolition, tiling and plumbing changes. Add 18% GST. Society deposits are extra.

Is it cheaper to renovate a kitchen or build a new one?+

A new kitchen in a bare, ready platform is cheaper — you skip ₹90,000 to ₹2.1 lakh of demolition, carting, re-tiling and re-wiring. Renovation costs more per running foot for the same specification, which surprises people who compare a renovation quote against a showroom price list.

How long does a kitchen renovation take?+

Two to three weeks if the platform stays and water does not move; four to six weeks with demolition, new plumbing and re-tiling, because tile curing and factory joinery lead time run in sequence. Mumbai society working hours of 10am to 6pm on weekdays typically add 20–30% to that.

Can I keep my old granite countertop?+

Sometimes. Granite survives careful removal about six times in ten, and the cut-outs rarely align with new cabinet positions. Re-polishing costs ₹180–250 per sq ft. If the layout is changing at all, budget for a new top and treat a reusable slab as a bonus.

Do I need society permission to renovate a kitchen?+

In Mumbai, almost always — any work involving demolition, debris or plumbing needs a written NOC, a refundable deposit and a worker list. Moving a drain line into the floor slab usually needs additional approval because it affects the flat below.

Does this estimate include GST?+

No. The headline range excludes GST; the breakdown shows 18% separately and then the all-in figure. Use the GST on interior work calculator if your contract splits goods and services.
