Find the bed that fits
Room dimensions plus what else has to go in the room.
How this calculator works
- Every standard bed is tested in turn, from single upward, and the largest one that passes both checks is returned. The logic is fixed — the same room always gives the same answer.
- Width check: bed width + side clearance ≤ room width. Side clearance is 60 inches with bedside tables on both sides, 42 inches otherwise.
- Length check: bed length + foot clearance + wardrobe depth ≤ room length. Foot clearance is at least 36 inches wherever a wardrobe opens into it.
- Mattress length check: the bed must be at least the occupant's height plus 4 inches. A 175 cm user is 68.9 inches and needs 73 inches, so a 75-inch single passes and a shorter custom bed would not.
- Every size is reported, whether it fits or not, with the room dimensions it would need — so you can see how close the next size up is.
| Size | Mattress | Room width needed (both sides used) | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 36 × 75 in | 8.0 ft | Child, guest room, servant room |
| Double | 48 × 75 in | 9.0 ft | One adult comfortably, two at a squeeze |
| Queen | 60 × 78 in | 10.0 ft | The default for a Mumbai master bedroom |
| King | 72 × 78 in | 11.0 ft | Master bedrooms over 130 sq ft |
| Custom | Made to size | — | Occupants over 188 cm, or odd room shapes |
Room width needed assumes 30 inches of walkway on each side. Where one side is against a wall, subtract 18 inches from the figure shown.

Design and build under one accountable roof
Worked example — the default bedroom
| Check | Arithmetic | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Room | 12 × 11 ft | 144 × 132 in |
| Side clearance, both sides used | 2 × 30 in | 60 in |
| King width test | 72 + 60 = 132 ≤ 132 | Passes, exactly |
| Foot clearance with wardrobe | max(36, 36) | 36 in |
| King length test | 78 + 36 + 24 = 138 ≤ 144 | Passes |
| Mattress length test | 78 ≥ 68.9 + 4 | Passes |
| Result | largest passing size | King, 72 × 78 in |
The width test passes with nothing to spare, which is worth knowing: the king works, but there is no room to widen the bedside tables beyond 18 inches.
What people get wrong about bed size
The most common mistake is buying the bed before the wardrobe is designed. A 24-inch wardrobe on the foot wall plus the 36 inches you need to open it takes five feet out of the room length, and in a 12 ft bedroom that leaves seven feet — enough for the bed and nothing else. If the wardrobe must be on the foot wall, use sliding shutters, which need no opening clearance and buy back three feet of usable room.
The second is the bed-back. A designed bed-back panel adds 4 to 8 inches to the bed's footprint, and a full-height upholstered headboard with side returns can add a foot. That is rarely on the drawing when the room is measured. Ask for the overall bed dimension including the back, not the mattress size.
The third is the storage base. Hydraulic-lift storage beds need the full mattress area to swing up, which means nothing can hang from the ceiling above the foot of the bed and there must be room to stand at the foot while lifting. Drawer-base beds need drawer pull-out clearance on whichever side the drawers open — usually 24 inches, and usually the side that also has the walkway.
Every constant on this page comes from Greenbox site records — measured drawings, signed BOQs and completion certificates from projects delivered between 2023 and 2026 — rounded to the figures an estimator would actually write down. We publish them so the arithmetic can be audited rather than trusted. Treat the output as a planning figure: accurate enough to brief a landlord, a bank or a family, and not accurate enough to sign a contract against.
What this tool does not cover
- Bed-back and headboard depth, which is joinery rather than mattress and is not included in the standard sizes above.
- Storage-bed mechanisms — hydraulic lift and drawer bases both need clearance this tool does not model.
- Door swing into the bedroom, which can conflict with the wardrobe or the bed corner.
- Attached bathrooms and dressing areas, which are measured separately from the bedroom.
- Air conditioner position — an indoor unit blowing directly onto the bed is the most common complaint in a finished bedroom.
- For the wardrobe itself, see the wardrobe layout planner and the wardrobe cost calculator.

Frequently asked questions
What is the standard king size bed in India?+
72 × 78 inches, which is 6 ft × 6 ft 6 in. It is narrower and shorter than a US king at 76 × 80 inches, so imported sheets and mattress protectors will not fit properly. Always buy bedding to Indian sizes.
Will a king bed fit in an 11 ft wide room?+
Yes, but with nothing to spare. A 72-inch king plus 30 inches of walkway on each side needs exactly 132 inches, which is 11 feet. It works, and your bedside tables cannot be wider than 18 inches.
How much space do you need around a bed?+
Thirty inches on each side that is actually used, and 36 inches at the foot where a wardrobe opens. Where one side is against a wall, 12 inches is enough for bedding to tuck in, but nobody will be able to make that side of the bed.
What size bed for a 10 × 12 ft bedroom?+
A queen, 60 × 78 inches, if the wardrobe is in the room. That leaves 30 inches each side of the bed in the 10 ft direction. A king needs 11 ft of width and will make the room feel cramped at 10.
How long should a mattress be?+
The tallest occupant's height plus four inches. A standard 78-inch mattress suits anyone up to about 188 cm. Above that, order a custom length — it costs 15–20% more and is far cheaper than sleeping badly for a decade.
