Where an Indian value brand is genuinely right
- Wardrobe internals. Drawers inside a wardrobe are opened a few hundred times a year without load. Premium runners there are money that could have bought a better carcass.
- Loft and utility shutters. Opened a handful of times a year.
- Office storage and pedestals. Standard duty, replaced with the lease, and spares availability matters more than feel.
- Rental and resale fit-outs. The horizon does not justify premium fittings anywhere.
- Second homes and low-occupancy flats. Cycle counts are a fraction of a permanent residence.
Where we would not use it
- Kitchen pan drawers in a household that cooks three times a day. The highest-cycle, highest-load component in the home deserves the best mechanism the budget allows.
- Heavy wall unit lift systems, where the consequence of a failure is a shutter falling.
- Handle-less push-to-open fronts, where the mechanism is the design.
- Exposed bathroom and balcony hardware in a sea-facing flat, where the specification question is stainless grade rather than brand.
The mixed schedule, with numbers
On a typical Mumbai 2BHK with a 12 ft kitchen and three wardrobes, a mixed hardware schedule looks like this.
| Location | Tier specified | Approximate hardware cost |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen base drawers, 6 nos | Premium drawer systems | ₹38,000 – 62,000 |
| Kitchen wall and tall unit doors | Mid-tier soft-close hinges | ₹6,000 – 11,000 |
| Kitchen accessories and pull-outs | Value to mid | ₹28,000 – 55,000 |
| Wardrobe shutters and internals | Value tier | ₹14,000 – 26,000 |
| Utility, loft, study | Value tier | ₹6,000 – 12,000 |
Specifying premium fittings throughout the same flat typically adds ₹45,000–90,000 for no perceptible benefit in the low-cycle locations.
What specifying it means on site
- Lead times on domestically manufactured fittings are generally shorter than on imported lines, which matters when a society has given you a fixed six-week work window and a missing pull-out holds up the kitchen handover.
- Spares are easier to source locally years later. A replacement basket of the same dimension is a phone call to a Mumbai dealer rather than an import enquiry.
- BOQ: “Wardrobe internals — concealed soft-close hinges and telescopic drawer slides, value tier, brand as scheduled; three hinges per shutter above 1,800 mm.”
- BOQ: “Kitchen base drawer systems to be premium tier as separately scheduled; value-tier runners not permitted in kitchen base units.”
- BOQ: “Hardware schedule to be handed over at completion listing brand, tier and quantity per cabinet.”
Our independence
Greenbox is an independent studio. We are not a dealer, distributor or partner for Ebco or any other brand referenced on this site, and no manufacturer influences what we specify. We buy through Mumbai dealers at market rates and share the supplier invoice where we procure for a client. Manufacturer warranties are offered on the manufacturer’s own terms.
Frequently asked questions
Is Indian hardware as good as imported?+
At entry and mid tier, the gap is much smaller than marketing suggests, and on low-cycle components it is not perceptible. At the top of the range, imported specialists still lead on damping consistency and load rating. Specify by cycle count and load, not by country of origin.
Can I use Ebco in a kitchen?+
For wall unit hinges, accessories and tall unit baskets, comfortably. For the base drawers that carry pans and get opened daily for fifteen years, we would put the money into a premium drawer system and save it elsewhere in the same kitchen.
Is Greenbox connected to Ebco?+
No. We hold no dealership, distributorship or commercial arrangement with Ebco or any other brand named on this site. We buy on the open market and pass through invoices on procurement.
Will mixing hardware brands cause problems later?+
No, provided the schedule is recorded. Different cabinets having different hinges is normal in professional joinery. What causes problems is an undocumented mix, where nobody knows which spare to order in year six. Keep the hardware schedule in the handover file.
How much can a mixed schedule save on a 2BHK?+
Typically ₹45,000–90,000 against specifying a premium brand throughout, with the saving taken entirely from low-cycle locations. On most projects we recommend putting that money into board grade or the countertop instead.
