What to cut and what to protect

The pattern is consistent: cut what is visible and replaceable, protect what is structural or mechanical. A laminate you dislike can be changed in five years; a hinge that fails takes the door with it.

A budget palette that does not look like a budget

Paint is the cheapest material in the room and the one that changes it most. Two tones, well chosen, in a washable grade, do more than ₹1 lakh of joinery.

  • Warm white #F4F1EA — three walls, washable emulsion
  • Deep green #4C5A52 — one wall behind the TV, the whole feature budget
  • Oak laminate #C6A87C — the TV unit fronts
  • Warm grey #9C9186 — curtains and the readymade sofa
  • Charcoal #25282A — one floor lamp and the curtain rod

Where to spend the money you saved

  • MR ply at 18 mm for the carcass, BWP only near water. In a dry living room MR is correct and saves about 22%. Particle board and commercial ply both fail in Mumbai humidity and are never worth the saving.
  • Branded soft-close hinges and channels, always. Hettich or Hafele at ₹380–₹700 per hinge. Unbranded hardware is the single most common failure in a budget interior and it fails within eighteen months.
  • 0.8 mm matt laminate rather than 1 mm acrylic. The saving is ₹550–₹700 per sq ft of shutter and the difference is visible only up close.
  • A surface-mounted cove profile instead of a gypsum ceiling. A PVC or gypsum cove profile fixed to the wall at ceiling level takes an LED strip and costs ₹180–₹340 per running foot against ₹600–₹900 for a built cove.

A ₹1.6 lakh living room, itemised

150 sq ft living room, budget specification, Mumbai 2026, ex-GST
ElementSpecification2026 Mumbai cost
TV unit8 ft, MR ply carcass, matt laminate, branded soft-close hardware₹58,000
SeatingReadymade 3-seat sofa in a fabric with a stain finish₹42,000
LightingSurface cove profile with LED strip, two circuits, four spots₹18,000
PaintWashable emulsion, three walls warm white and one feature colour₹16,000
Curtains and rugCotton-blend curtains on a plain rod, a flatweave rug₹14,000
Wall art and shelfOne floating shelf and framed prints instead of a panelled wall₹12,000

Total at this specification: ₹1,60,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. Phasing works here: the TV unit and paint first, seating and curtains in month three, lighting last. All three phases are independent.

Three false economies

  1. Unbranded hardware. It saves ₹9,000 on a living room and it is the reason the unit needs work in year two. Hinges, channels and locks are the last place to save.
  2. Particle board or commercial ply. Both are cheaper than MR ply and both swell irrecoverably from a single water event, which every Mumbai flat has eventually.
  3. No lighting budget. A ₹1.6 lakh room with one tube light looks like a ₹60,000 room. Two circuits and a warm strip cost ₹18,000 and change the whole space.

Doing this in a Mumbai flat

A budget interior in Mumbai has to survive the same monsoon as an expensive one, and the failures are the same: swollen carcasses, rusted hardware, blown drivers. So the budget has to hold three things — MR ply or better, branded hardware, and a decent LED driver — and everything else can flex. Labour is the other variable: a carpenter working on site is cheaper per unit than a workshop but slower and messier, and in a society with 10am to 6pm working hours a three-week on-site job becomes five. For a budget of this size, factory-made carcasses assembled on site usually work out cheaper overall once you count the days. Keep ₹15,000 aside for the electrical, because a 1990s flat's living room circuit is rarely adequate for a modern television wall.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum to do a living room properly?+

About ₹1.4–₹1.8 lakh for a 150 sq ft room with a TV unit, paint, lighting, curtains and readymade seating. Below ₹1 lakh you are painting and buying furniture, which is a perfectly reasonable thing to do and should not be called an interior project.

Is MR ply good enough?+

In a dry living room, yes, and it saves about 22% over BWP. Use BWP within 1 m of any water point, in kitchens and bathrooms, and for the bottom 150 mm of anything that gets mopped around.

Should I skip the false ceiling?+

On a budget, always. It is ₹36,000–₹54,000 that buys you concealed lighting and 150 mm less height. A surface cove profile with an LED strip gives 80% of the effect for a fifth of the cost.

Can I phase the work?+

Yes, and it is the best strategy on a tight budget. Do electrical and paint first because they are disruptive, then joinery, then soft furnishings. Just make sure the electrical anticipates the final layout, because that is the phase you cannot revisit cheaply.
