Sizing: the error that wastes the drawer

A cutlery tray is sized to the internal dimension of the drawer box, not to the cabinet width. A 600 mm cabinet with a tandem box has roughly 522 mm of internal width; a ply drawer in the same cabinet has about 500 mm. Order the tray after the drawer system is fixed, not with the kitchen, and make sure the depth matches too — a 450 mm tray in a 500 mm drawer leaves a 50 mm gap where small items fall behind and jam the runner.

What goes where

  • Top drawer, 86 mm high: cutlery tray, immediately beside the dishwasher or the sink.
  • Second drawer, 118 mm: spice and utensil dividers, near the hob.
  • Deep drawer, 199 mm: pots and pans with a plate-holder insert rather than a cutlery tray.
  • Under-sink: no tray — that space is for the bin pull-out and cleaning products.

Cleaning and the Mumbai reality

Anything with fixed moulded compartments collects turmeric, oil film and crumbs in its corners, and in a kitchen that cooks daily that happens within weeks. A tray that lifts out in one piece and can be washed at the sink is worth more than a beautiful fixed insert. Check that before buying: lift it, see whether it comes free of the drawer without tools.

Tray or organiser?

In Indian kitchen conversation “accessories” covers cutlery trays, plate racks, bottle pull-outs, spice pull-outs, corner units and waste bins, and quotations often bundle them as one lump line. Ask for them itemised. Accessories are typically 8–14% of a modular kitchen's cost — on a ₹3.5 lakh kitchen that is ₹28,000–49,000, which is enough to deserve a list. See modular kitchen design and the kitchen cost calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What size cutlery tray do I need?+

Measure the internal width and depth of the drawer box, not the cabinet. A 600 mm cabinet gives roughly 500–522 mm internally depending on the drawer system. Order the tray after the drawers are confirmed.

Are wooden cutlery trays practical in India?+

They look and feel better, and they are fine as long as cutlery goes in dry. In a household where things are put away damp, a plastic or aluminium tray is more sensible and can go through a dishwasher.

Can a cutlery tray be added later?+

Easily — it simply sits in the drawer. This is one accessory worth deferring if the budget is tight at handover, unlike pull-outs and corner units which need to be planned into the carcass.

Should every drawer have an insert?+

No. Inserts earn their place in the top two drawers where small items live. Deep drawers work better with a couple of adjustable dividers or a plate holder, which cost less and adapt as your cooking changes.
